  • What defines a job title/role

I am trying to figure out what actually defines your job title in law or if its solely on the role you do.

I will try to provide a basic background for this enquiry, it may help to understand it better.

I currently and have worked in a security position for 8 years, continuously. It is under contract to the factory by a security personnel provider.
When i 1st started it was a 2man position for a different provider, it was a high profile position due to MOD contracts.
The MOD contracts came to an end and the provider was switched to my current employer to whom i tupe'd over to, the contract was radically altered the largest difference being a reduction from a 2man to 1man site.
This change i wasnt particularly happy about due to the heavy workload of the site and the legal restrictions of entitlements to basic breaks etc, however it turned out to be ok as alot of the key security practices were also removed and deemed no longer appropriate (cost££).
Over the course of the next 5 years more and more practices were removed and stripped away, no more cctv, no key control, and the role literally was stripped back to a bum in a chair opening and closing a barrier on dayshifts and operating a bms on the nightshifts.
Then the biggest change came last year (2012) when the receptionist passed away. They transferred the site switchboard, internal comms systems and broadcast system into the gatehouse. Simple admin tasks such as booking of pool cars, issuing temporary staff passes, filling photocopiers etc became the responsibility of the gateman, basically we took over 90% of the roles the receptioist used to do.

So now i am at this point, even more security tasks have now been taken away, the barrier is effectively automated now with a swipe card pass entry (i only operate it for delivery vehicles and visitors) and we are doing fulltime receptionist duties.

So, back to my question, what determines my job title/role?
As a security officer i am not eligible to rest breaks under eu employment law exceptions, and i have to pay £220 for a licence to do the job.
As a receptionist i am entitled to the rest periods as there is no exception in the law applicable to receptionists and i wouldnt have to pay to work, i feel i am now a receptionist not a security officer but as no changes have been made to my contract since 2007 (including responsibilities ie it doesnt state i have to answer the phones etc and i am still monitoring cctv which doesnt exist anymore)

Thanks for any help, would like to know where i stand before approaching anything official
