      Best Christmas Bargains Ever

      Nov 16 2008 The Judge
Here To Help Beat The Crunch
HIGH STREET stores are offering the biggest-ever pre-Christmas bargains in a desperate bid to beat the recession.
Cash-rich shoppers can save hundreds of pounds today as a host of sales start earlier than ever... Debenhams are offering 60 per cent off furniture while Laura Ashley, Homebase and Sofa Workshop are all lowering prices.
John Lewis - which traditionally doesn't cut prices before Christmas - is giving £50 off if you buy a washing maching and tumble dryer. WH Smith are slashing top-selling books by up to 60 per cent.
A Black and Decker drill set has been hammered down from £70 to £35 at B&Q. Currys are selling a 32in digital TV for £599 from £750 and Woolworths have cut a Playmobil police boat from £19.99 to £9.99.

Re: Credit Crunch Christmas (37 days)

My three kids really know how to save money at Christmas. All three have left home and all have good jobs. This weekend though I got calls, texts and E-mails from them all and I am catering for 9 on Christmas day. That's just the start though, I am also catering for their girlfriends, boyfriend and a gay housemate who his parents don't understand him. I was thinking of puttting a sign up in the front garden and a menu near the door, I might even put a price-list on it. I know the poor old wine cellar is in for a thrashing. Thanks for the info about the tesco wine for £3 Enaid, I will go and stock up.

I have it on good authority that Netto are doing Gallo wines for £3 a bottle.

Also I believe Aldi or Lidl have got jacob's Creek at £3 per bottle.

With the Morrison's thingy, if you knew you were going to spend £80, would it be best to send it throuugh the checkout in two lots of £40? Then you'd get two £20 vouchers wouldn't you

Also Iceland have recently started a bonus points card, not sure how it works but I've got one anyway. Am hoping if i get enough points i'll win the Jackpot prize of being allowed to stuff Kerry Katona in a freezer and leave her there forever......

any tips for nice easy budget recipes?

Mine is the easiest ice cream - it will really impress

                1 x jar lemon curd
                1 x 600ml double cream

just mix together and freeze- dont even need to use a icecream maker.

Try it its lovely ( and dont tell anyons how easy it is)

You can use orange curd as well.

Also to keep food longer ( fruit and veg) use the stayfresh type antibacterial bags in the fridge - they sell them at lakeland and Robert Dyas. Saves your veg going mouldy

                  Christmas
Canny shoppers can save a pretty penny by turning to the internet to buy their presents

                  Jennifer Hill

Christmas shoppers are turning to the internet to get their presents as spending on the high street slows — and canny consumers can net excellent bargains.
“E-tailers” are expecting a 15% rise in turnover compared with last year, with consumers spending a total of £13.2 billion, or £215 each, online in the final quarter of the year.
Christmas spending is expected to peak on December 8 — three weeks from now — says industry body IMRG, with an estimated £320m likely to be spent on the internet during that day.
Here are our five steps to savvy shopping.

                  Start early
Must-have Christmas presents are likely to go up in price as the big day gets nearer — so buying early can save you a pretty penny.
Star Wars trooper helmets by Hasbro are among this year’s “big 12” toys as is Upsy Daisy and Her Chase n Play Bed from In The Night Garden, according to the Toy Retailers Association — and the shops could well raise prices as stocks get low.
The Nintendo Wii games console is likely to suffer the same fate.
“You will do well to get a Nintendo Wii or Wii Fit for the recommended retail price or less,” said Bruce Fair, managing director at the shopping aggregator kelkoo.co.uk .
“The recommended retail price is £179.99, but last year it was inflated to £300 and the Wii Fit has been up as high as 300% of recommended retail price when stock is exhausted.”

                  Compare prices
So-called shopbots, such as Kelkoo, pricerunner.co.uk and smartshopping.co.uk , will trawl the web to hunt down the best online prices.
Kelkoo, for example, shows that Amazon is the cheapest source for the Star Wars helmet (at £24.99, 17% off the recommended retail price) and also has the lowest prices for the Upsy Daisy toy (at £32.90, 6% off) and the Nintendo Wii (at £169.97, a 5% saving).
Last week it also took £50 off a MacBook Air laptop from pixmania.com — giving a total saving of £259 off the recommended retail price of £1,299.
Pricerunner’s Christmas guide highlights a half-price saving on the Samsung D1070 10.2 megapixel digital camera from comet.co.uk at only £69, and a Samsung flat-screen television set for £799 — a saving of £200.99.

                  Use discount vouchers
Discount voucher and code websites such as vouchercodes.co.uk , myvouchercodes.co.uk , everydaysale.co.uk and gcodes.co.uk — which was launched last week — can knock as much as 70% off your shopping bill.
Myvouchercodes has 20% off Wallis, 15% off Thorntons and 10% off Topshop, Debenhams and thefragranceshop.co.uk .
Everydaysale has vouchers for up to 60% off jewellery at goldsmiths.co.uk , 20% off clothes at French Connection, 10% off sports books at Waterstone’s and up to 70% off box sets at HMV.
It is also highlighting an extra 10% off wheeled toys and table games at halfords.com : a “flame” quad bike worth £199.99 and reduced to £99.99 can be bought for £89.99, while a foldable football table, down from £129.99 to £69.99, can be snapped up for just £62.99.

                  Special offers
Hunt down special offers, too. Mothercare.com is offering buy one, get one half price, on its own-brand toys. It also has a special offer on the In The Night Garden’s talking Makka Pakka with mini Upsy Daisy and Igglepiggle — reduced by 37% to £16.99 from £26.99.
Waterstones.com has 40% or more off hundreds of books, thorntons.co.uk has three-for-two deals on many Christmas items, while boots.com has half-price cameras.
Buy everything you want from one site at the same time to cut down on delivery costs: standard delivery at Mothercare costs £4.95, but is free for orders of £150 or more. Amazon.co.uk delivers free with orders of £15 or more and Boots.com with orders of £45 and over.
Meanwhile, boffer.co.uk , launched a month ago, sells excess stock and goods from retailers that have gone bankrupt. One product goes online every day at 23.59pm. It has previously sold the iPod Nano, worth £109, for £19.99.
The website will have a “sell off” from one minute to midnight tonight.

                  Get cashback

Websites such as quidco.com , cashbackkings.com and topcashback.co.uk credit your account with money back every time you shop.
The former, for example, offers 30% cashback on Nokia handsets, 4% on spending at debenhams.co.uk and 1.5% at argos.co.uk

Haven't we got a Christmas recipes thread somewhere? I'll see if I can find it and resurrect it.

That icecream would be nice with some cointreau mixed into the orange curd variety, methinks

Major retailers are slashing prices in a pre-Christmas bid to breathe life into the ailing high street

                          Retailers in pre-Christmas sales.

Marks & Spencer is cutting prices by 20% in its clothing and homewares departments in its biggest one-day promotion for four years.
Retail giants Debenhams and Bhs were also discounting stock this week.
The high street fears the economic downturn will stop people hitting the shops ahead of this year's festive season, with Debenhams saying next month is set to be "the worst Christmas we have ever had".
Analysts say consumers appear to be delaying their Christmas shopping, hoping to catch bargains as shops increase their sales.
M&S spokeswoman Clare Wilkes said: "M&S customers are telling us they are feeling the pinch more than ever and they need some support to help make Christmas extra special."
Asked about speculation that the event would dilute sales leading up to Christmas, she said: "These are really unusual times and it's a very volatile and competitive environment and we need to trade through it. We need to compete for every share of the pound that is available to be spent."
Debenhams is in the middle of a three-day £200 million price-cutting campaign across every trading area in all its stores and online. A spokesman said sale customers had queued outside the stores, which were "packed".
Debenhams deputy chief executive Michael Sharp said the retail sector was "staring into the face of the worst Christmas we have ever had" and said the final weekend before Christmas would be key and that many retailers would have gone on sale by then.
His warning comes as a raft of retailers including Gap, Oasis and Warehouse issue "secret sale" and "friends and family" vouchers.
