Re: You can't ignore parking fines, can you?
To PlanB: "Pikey" is really racist? Oh dear. Like the people who say it don't distinguish between ordinary people with certain ethnic heritage and people in the "traveller" group. Guy Ritchie made a film where that word was used over and over again, but most people didn't have a problem with it. And as for his accent, I understand every single word, but I won't deny that I think it sounds funny (like he says "abaat" instead of "about") And about parking tickets, OK you believe they're a money spinning exercise (after all, many say that about speeding fines) but when you challenge them, do you usually feel you have some grounds for doing so, or do you still do it even when you've blatantly violated the terms (eg. overstayed by a good length of time) And what do you usually do?

Re: You can't ignore parking fines, can you?
I was aware of the ignore button from someone else and I did use it simply because the person concerned was continuing for a lengthy period of time to jibe at things from a previous employment long since over. The consequence of that issue is that when a person who you have on ignore wants help and you might be invaluable on that part, you simply never get to respond to them because you are unaware of their issue.Originally posted by PlanB View PostI think diverse opinions are essential but if a poster is outnumbered on a thread it can come across as bullying :director:
I agree with you and on forums we do see pack mentality at times to be honest.
I didn't even know there was an "ignore" button and I don't personally see the need because that would be a form of (self) censorship :censored: I wouldn't want to live in a bubble where I thought only my views were right or valid. Heaven forbid !
To Go: there is a swear filter on the forum, to attempt to get around that swear filter is a breach of site rules. There are other words to say what you want to say such as idiot, clown, wally etc etc although that might be a breach of the site rules. I have tried a few times over the last few months to stretch an insult to see whether or not it breaches site rules. It didn't but I am sure there will be more threads where I can test that theory out

I think you're quite right to do what works best for you. But I do feel branding a person as a "pikey" in public may be seen as a tad racist these days and could invite trouble. It seems this was because of his accent and you couldn't understand what he was saying - I'm a bit like that when I listen to Stephen Hawking.Originally posted by GO84 View PostRight, so that's what I'm doing by putting one joker on ignore?

As for parking tickets I challenge everyone I get because I see them as a money-spinning exercise and nothing to do with parking in the wrong place at the wrong time. But then I was born before yellow lines and the Denver Boot were invented and we all managed fine without them. If this guy has got a method that works (some of the time even if not all of the time) then I for one would give it a go. I don't believe in homeopathy but it works for some people so it's not for me to condemn it.

In reply to comment #206:My comment that you've quoted (#198) was a response to the comment just before it:Originally posted by leclerc View PostGO84 the above comment is in breach of site rules and does NOT stop them commenting here, it only stops you from reading what they say to you.I know I cannot stop them commenting here, but I told CC early on that I didn't want to talk to him if he was just going to post sarcastic comments that didn't add anything to the discussion, and then I told him I'd put him on ignore.Originally posted by Inca View Postalthough if someone 'blocked' me,,I'd kinda take the hint they really don't wanna play conkers any more

I came on here originally for help,,,got that help (and more)..found I 'gelled' with some people and have gone on to form friendships away from here which is great.I don't 'dislike' anyone,I just choose with whom I interact. Some of the threads on here are so serious and we have to be mindful that these are real people, with real problems but other threads are so wild they are funny.LB prides itself on it's 'come on in,,we'll help you' image, even if that help is just moral support (that I can give in abundance whilst I'm learning the ins and outs of debts ,laws etc)

Interesting replies, Kinda agree with Inca in that you can sometimes learn something new even from someone who is able to hit your buttons and wind you up.
AS for why people use sites like this, I really don't think it matters (within reason) . If it is someone's lifeline although you may think it is not healthy that is just fine. If they want to tell their life stories either in one long post or over lots of snippets so be it.

I don't use it myself, there are plenty of people on here that i don't get along with, but they may come up with something I didn't think of, or some fact I was unaware of.Originally posted by jon1965 View PostSerious question here
Is hitting the ignore button really the right way to go, so we disagree and argue but is the ignore button the cowards way out, or the way out of someone who is unable to argue their point?
Discuss
I think it depends on what people come on here for to a large extent, some like to come on here to give thier life stories, and are not really interested on anyone else, for these the ignore button is ideal because it prevents interruption.

No is the answer. I use that facility and have asked site team if there is any way of putting into the forum an ignore thread button(I wishOriginally posted by jon1965 View PostSerious question here

It can work as a form of self censorship which can be good(that was my reason for using it). If there are certain triggers that make you rant or do annoy the living daylights out of you but you still just cannot not respond the ignore poster button works a treat. Thankfully the list I have is very small but it is a useful tool to have on a forum. We are not always going to get along or not be annoyed/angered not to respond to others so the ignore poster is good(it also means you do not get Private Messages from them either
).

There are always going to be clashes of opinions and /or personalities on fora such as these. I have only 'clicked ignore' on one poster because I won't stoop to his antagonistic level and every thread was becoming a he-v-me argument. I read posts of others I disagree with and make the choice whether to post or not...depends on my mood at the time.

When I was on CAG there was a lot of threads that were disagreeable but normally I simply raised the eyebrows and left them to like minded individuals. In the end, there was not much left to post on OTR, lol!!Originally posted by bizzybob View PostLOL
