Sorry if this sounds crass but how the hell can any decent woman want to sleep with a guy with no teeth in his head.

It is all very emotive and it does appear that Mr Philpott was not a very nice man. We await the judges verdict and hope that justice will be done..

I have a suspicion that the father may commit suicide in due course. Quite a few of those prisoners whom the state finds embarrassing tend to find themselves suddenly, and conveniently, dead.

I believe that the American term for this is 'suicided'.

Damn - I knew I should have been laying off bets! Could have cleaned several people out on that verdict!

For anyone not entirely clear on the tariffing system for life sentences, the tariff is, as it says, the minimum amount of time that someone spends in prison before they can be paroled. It does not mean they will only spend 15 years in prison - it may be anything above that to a full life. A tariff of 15 years is high - higher than those handed out for most murder convictions. The "average" tariff, if such a thing could be said to exist, is around 9 years for men and 12 for women (go on and ask me - I dare you!!!).

I watched the news earlier and some bloke was explaining the 'tariff' system.
Now,,am I correct,,the other 2 got 17 years each but only have to serve 8.5 and will be 'on licence' for the remaining 8.5?
'He' has to serve a minimum of 15 years before he can apply (and probably will never get I hope) for parole, and IF he was let out 'on licence' it would be for life?

Not entirely no. In respect of the other two, they will, in common with all people who get such sentences, only serve half if they behave appropriately. It's a third served for shorter sentences - half for longer ones - but the good behaviour rule applies to both. They would then be on licence for the rest of their sentence. He would be on licence for life if he is paroled. For lifers, the bar is higher. It requires more than just good behaviour, but also an ability to demonstrate an awareness of the "wrongness" of your crime and an ability to integrate back into society. These latter two are actually the hardest parts for lifers to manage. And, incidentally, the reason why "innocent" lifers can spend more time in prison than guilty people. If you won't admit your guilt etc., etc. then you are not considered eligible for parole, so actually being innocent is kind of inconvenient!

Now, for my next trick... the wife is going to appeal her sentence. Anyone want to take me up on that, and what odds are you offering?

After nearly having to gouge my eyes out for looking at the DM. George Osbourne should resign if he made the reported comments. How dare he suggest that that benefits cause this. If he had his way benefits would kill far more people

Instead I ask the simpler question: why?

                            Re: Derby Fire - Guilty

They were originally charged with murder by the CPS however after a full investigation it was changed to manslaughter. The reason for this was because they never meant to kill the children it was a "stupid and reckless act" but not premeditated murder. Had they taken them to court on a charge of murder and not got a conviction they would have walked free.

The question is Why appeal? and not why was it not murder but manslaughter cos I understand that bit, lol!
