Tax is outside my field. Labman certainly seems to have his finger on the button with it, though.

Ok, Bluebottle I haven't followed all the posts through but how long did you serve as a copper(i wanted to say pig but I am sure you are not a girl ). Did you ever get asked to use RIPA to investigate parents of children in the court system for contempt of court in family proceedings?

          Re: Ask Bluebottle

I spent just short of 9 years in the force before an accident on duty ended my career. I studied various areas of the law to stop myself climbing the walls with boredom whilst rehabilitating from two unsuccessful knee operations and have kept myself abreast of changes in the law since.

Contempt of Court in the Family Court would normally be dealt with by the judge issuing an Arrest Warrant to Court Bailiffs, not police officers. In my experience, the only time police officers would become involved in any Family Court proceedings is in Child Protection cases or where a Non-Molestation Order is in force.

The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 came into force after I medically-retired from the police force, so I am not that familiar with it.

Old legal joke - Q. "What's the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion?"
            A. "Depends on the judge but generally about 5 years!"

If you're lucky! Really serious tax evasion can incur a substantial custodial sentence, especially if it is clear to the HMRC investigators that you have set to intentionally defraud H.M. Treasury.
