  • Alton Towers....not what i expected.

I took my family to Alton Towers theme park over the bank holiday weekend. I paid a small fortune for the stay in their hotel, mainly to keep the kids happy as i had promised my daughter i would for her birthday.

I have to say that from the motorway, the park is poorly signed, when we went to Chessington, Thorpe park, Paultons Park, they were all signed from the motorway, however Alton Towers does not benefit from this luxury.

So, on arrival i find out that the Smiler Ride is not working, now on Sky the night before, there's an advert telling everyone to come to the park and ride the new ride, the ride that isnt working!!!!. So we felt a tad deflated at that, but we decided to carry on and make the best of it even though the kids were disappointed.

So, we get into the park, brought my lad a toy, when we got it back to the hotel, it was buggered, the batteries were brown with corrosion and leaked everywhere.

We queued up for over an hour to get on a ride called "Rita", we got to the front of the queue, only for the ride to break down, we then waited for ages, then they made an announcement telling us that they had decided to close the ride. Half of the afternoon was lost on this alone. And whats worst, nothing to compensate us at all. Now ive read their terms and conditions and i know there are clauses that say no liability for closed rides etc, so i get that, but it don't stop me from feeling really let down after spending a LOT of money on this place.

Sooo, we decided to abandon the day and go back to the hotel, before we left the park, i made a point of asking a member of staff one question. That was as follows " As a hotel guest, i understand the park opens at 9am?" yes i am told, so i asked a second question " so, if i come in at 9am, i can get on Air,Ripsaw and Nemesis?" yes sir you can.

So we go back to the hotel planning our second day in the park.

We had a meal in the Secret Garden restaurant, my daughter had fish in batter with chips, she said it didn't taste right, although i put it down to my daughter being fussy, however, at night i don't think that i was right, because she had serious stomach cramps and shyte everywhere.

    Soooo, we start day two.

We get to the monorail station and the bloke there tells us, "its broken down and we don't know why" any idea when it will be fixed? no, any idea when the mechanics will be here? no, so i tried to catch the guy, to ask how to get to the park from the hotel as it isnt sign posted or shown on their map of the park that they gave us, the bloke just ignored me and walked off.

Anyway, we manage to get to the park eventually, and we get in, we go to the back of the park to get on Air, Ripsaw, and Nemesis, and as were walking towards the ride some bloke walks in front of us and say that we cant go there. So i asked why, and i was told only one ride in this area opens before 10am and that's nemesis. So i asked when the others open, 10am im told, and the arcades too? yes he said.

Well he was wrong, the arcade opened at 10:17am and frankly at this point the kids were pretty pi$$ed off, they had to walk all the way to the back of the park and couldn't go on anything other than nemesis which my lad was too small for and there was nothing else open for him to go on.

I feel that the staff had given out bad misinformation there which did impact on our day. I mean you expect staff to know how their park operates ffs.

So, on leaving the park, my daughter and son ask for a hoodie each, to remember the park as like a souvenir, so we buy them a hoodie each from the shop, we get home and my daughter tries hers on, and it literally falls apart, she put her had in her pocket and there was a huge hole in the pocket

To top it all off, Friday evening, during the soaps on ITV, there was an advert inviting customers to come to alton towers to ride the smiler ride, yes, thats the one that broke down and didnt work!!!

Overall, i feel pretty let down after spending the sums i spent there, however, this is not the end of the story, its the beginning, as im now going to take Alton Towers to task about this. Lets see how they deal with complaints!!

Moral of the story ...... make up a picnic, find a nice park/beach and have fun with the kids, you can spend quality time with them and save money at the same time.

I'm really sorry you had to go through all of that PT, I really hope you rip them to shreds.

We went there 2 years ago pt,,and I wish I'd known you were planning a trip cos I would have told you it's absolute crap, and obviously hasn't improved. It was the biggest waste of time and money,,nothing worked properly..food was appalling and it was a long journey for nothing. Ironically,I have had tourists asking me the way to the towers in my home town cos it's the same name...I have to tell them they are 300 miles in the wrong direction.

You should have saved a bit of that alleged fish for analysis by a public health laboratory.

Have to say my experience of them was totally opposite.

I went with my elder 2 as babby was a babe in arms, and we were treated like Royalty, we wanted to go on a ride No 1 son was too small for and the assistant got down to his level and explained why he couldnt ride it ("The safety belt will be to big and you will fall out, and it's against the law for little boys to fall out of rides before the end of the Summer Hols"). We went on the runaway train (my son's favourite) and ride operator let it go round twice cos of his squeals.
We went to see the fish in the sea world eqsue place, and No 1 son panicked, so someone arrived with walkie talkie and asked if he could hold their hand as they were scared..

we had a fantastic time of it, and are planning our next trip, but I agree about the signing.

Given my obvious mobility issues Puff (and whilst I don't expect special treatment),,one would have thought my experience would have been more positive,,it wasn't. I've actually been there twice, once when kiddo was little and again with stepkid.......and never ever again,,it's actually got worse..it's cheap and shoddy now and the staff we encountered weren't brilliant either.
I recommend Monkey World in Dorset,,it's absolutely brilliant. Informative, loads to do,,loads to see, lovely picnic areas (I don't buy food from concessions,,too flipping expensive),,we thoroughly enjoyed it. They supply electric wheelchairs for a deposit which is refunded when chair is given back, the staff are full of useful information and really polite. Plus the MONKEYS.......ya gotta love the MONKEYS (and all the species)

Personally I cannot rate highly enough THE Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield.
It is totally free (bonus) and you can go down the pit in the lifts the Miners use. Most of the walkways are smooth and wide enough for a wheelchair, and the guide will show you the easiest way round.
When I took The Kids no 2 son was too small to go down the pit, 5+ only, so my mum stayed in the special soft play area, (there is a playground outside too) and we took the tour, the guide asked were the kids in "decent clothes" (yeh right I bring the kids to a coal mine in Armani) when I said no, they lot cost a fiver, he had them crawling under the lode, like the Victorian miners did, he got them hunting for white coal (a miners joke for a cup of tea apparently) and at the end he said, I will now make you honourary miners, and smeared coal dust over their faces. They LOVED it!!

And for the Inca.. there are pit ponies to see, a wheelchair friendly exhibition of mining and the outbuildings to explore

Well the complaint has been made to the Resort.

They do not have a complaints procedure which i did find rather weird. However, i had to use the "Feedback" form to complain so lets see what happens from here.

Worth a complait but i suspect ride clsures would be put down as safety issues and you will be pointed to terms and conditions would expect a complimentary pass or buy one get one free offer,
The moral with all these major attractions id not to go when they will be busy bank holidays weekends school holidays

No wonder so many families get on a plane and fly 8 hours to Florida!

You get a lot of choice, customer service with a smile, they tell you to "have a nice day" every time you approach someone, hotels are cheap, rooms are huge, food is tasty and the weather's glorious!

...not to mention the fireworks displays in the evening!

Problem with that wales is the holidays are the only time that families can go..........it's now virtually impossible to take a child out of school for anything short of death..and I'm being serious,,schools go doolally if little Herbert takes a day off to go out with parents,,they don't authorise it and it goes as a black mark on Herberts record.
Theme parks should announce ride closures on their websites.
Alton Towers is getting a bad reputation for closing rides for no apparent reason,,my niece was complaining about it the other week..

Alton Towers should be offering a full refund and compensation for this fiasco. I know you had been looking forward to this a long while and had saved up to give your kids a proper treat. What a huge disappointment.
"Although scalar fields are Lorentz scalars, they may transform nontrivially under other symmetries, such as flavour or isospin. For example, the pion is invariant under the restricted Lorentz group, but is an isospin triplet (meaning it transforms like a three component vector under the SU(2) isospin symmetry). Furthermore, it picks up a negative phase under parity inversion, so it transforms nontrivially under the full Lorentz group; such particles are called pseudoscalar rather than scalar. Most mesons are pseudoscalar particles." (finally explained to a captivated Celestine by Professor Brian Cox on Wednesday 27th June 2012 )
