  • CO-OP basic account problems.

Mr R has a basic bank account with the co-op and we check our account daily as we have no overdraft facility.

In recent months we have been charged for going overdrawn despite checking our account and it showing online, and at the ATM as in credit. Once we were charged £25 for going £10 over after both the website and the ATM showed we have over £200 in the bank, when in actual fact we had £95 and I took shopping money.

They are now calling him regarding this, and are threatening to close the account, despite us proving we are checking the account and getting receipts from the ATM, the account is not being updated from their end, and their answer was either upgrade at a cost to a current account, or go to our nearest branch, daily.. and nearly 8 miles away, for up to date information.

Any advice on how to deal with this?

So they won't have him back eh, then open in your name only or is that not an option either ?

If Mr R was to be sent a cheque written out to him then you would not be able to bank it as the account is in your name not his. If you opened a joint account then there would be a credit search done on both of you and may be knocked back due to credit record info.

My suggestion is that you keep open the co-op account and don't use it unless you have to (for cashing any cheques for example) use your account for the day to day running of things. For the sake of wages/salary/benefits transfer the money as soon as it comes in to another acccount.

I worked for one of the top four banks for seven years so this field is one I have fairly sound knowledge on.

Ruby how about a BACS payment?

Also, do you know if a DMP in my hubbys name stop me getting a nationwide account?

The Flex account is just a basic account with a cash card, we had to take proof of id etc and at the time we had all kinds of CCJ's against us.

BACS payments - some companies will ask what name the account is in others don't. Some just ask for a sort code and account number to send payments to. Pot luck really.

With regard to opening an account with Nationwide you probably have a 70% chance of being rejected depending how they do their credit search. Assuming you both live at the same address?

Remember each company has quite a different way of underwriting accounts and creteria.

On the back of Sapphy's last post I assumed that Mr R had money owing to Nationwide (perhaps overdraft?)and that is why he had to close the account when he went into a DMP? If that is not the case then yes by all means try opening an account with them.

yes he had an overdraft, and the bills were just too high so we took out a DMP and they were a creditor.
