  • Hugh's war on waste

A real eye opener of a programme imho, not the fact that these things go on, but the sheer amounts of food wasted.

    Episode 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...aste-episode-1
    Episode 2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...aste-episode-2

Even if you can't be bothered or have time to watch the episodes, please sign up and add your support https://wastenotuk.com/. Although our major supermarkets say the food fit for human consumption is sent out to charities etc it seems that's not always the case. Although our supermarkets state they support small farmers that also is not always the case and it seems they are often the reason for the farmers going out of business.
Supermarkets insist the consumer wants the perfect fruit and veg, so all fruit and veg not up to standard goes back in the ground at the expense of the farmer.
Supermarkets also rely on us to keep em up and running so it would be in their best interest to start listening to us.

Ooo that's very cynical of you.

I prefer to think that once such people have money and 'fame' they are in a better position to use it to do good and publicise issues, campaign on issues, that us mere mortals would struggle to get a retweet on.

I am very cynical AME fame doesn't make anyone cleverer than the rest of us ,

Or give them the right to dictate he could have done this without a tv programme using the other media he uses

I watched both episodes and found them very, very informative, I didn't feel dictated to at all.
I can't personally think of a better media than the tv to get these things across and you are right about not be cleverer than us just cause they on tv there are indeed some proper nob eds on the box.

It wouldn't really have had the same effect.

Be interesting to see how much waste there is from River cottage.... lol. I'm pretty sure his Bins will be being watched quite carefully now.

Tesco and the Trussell Trust http://www.trusselltrust.org/tesco-collection scheme where you Donate in store:

Simply pick up one of our shopping lists and donate an item or two (or more!) at your nearest store, to help stop people going hungry in your community. To find your nearest store and the charity it is collecting for, please use the map below. Express stores will be hosting collection points from 23rd November-5th December.

That seems a bit naff if you had seen what the young couple got out of their waste bins late at night that was perfectly edible and is in fact used to feed homeless etc.

Don’t get me started on the way supermarkets exploit the farmers and other growers! They have pushed so many to and even over the edge.
I do have to agree that we need well known faces to promote these causes. Now I cannot say I always like Hugh’s, erm, cuisine. Seems to me the man will cook and eat anything if it hangs around long enough, but I do think this issue needs to be pushed into the spotlight.

An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after 50 floors says, 'So far so good'!
