It's been so long ago that I'd forgotten what that used to mean.

In my case, it was usually a sore wrist. msl:

As you wrote, 1959 was the date you were born Cleverclogs?

I was born much before that and I remember what Dartford, Kent was like in the early 1950's when Maggie was campaigning at the age of 24...one would have to be quite stoic to go onto building sites campaigning, in that area and at that particular time!

I also remember exactly what it was like under Harold Wilson; Callaghan and then Wilson again...the rubbish was piled high in the streets and they had to freeze corpses as there was nobody to bury them...

Your sequence of PMs is wrong - it should be Wislon, Heath, Wislon, Callaghan, with the lattermost's imposed wage restraints helping to cause the strikes that led to bodies being stacked in any hospital cupboard that staff could find. Did you know that a few bodies still turn up every year from where they were forgotten in the winter of 1979?

I did but, as I have come to expect of the Daily Wail, it was full of disingenuous drivel.

The mines that were closed in the 1960s weren't closed by Wislon, but by Lord Robens - and those mines were not just deemed "uneconomic" but were actually difficult or dangerous to work. With coal seam heights of 500mm or so, it was impossible to mechanise them.

No, I did not in Ted Heath for obvious reasons...

For the avoidance of doubt let us not forget the hand that Arthur Scargill played Re: Maggie!

But why? Do you suppose that, because Heath was a Conservative, the UK enjoyed boundless prosperity and industrial peace during his premiership, which had not been the case under Old Gravel Voice?

Have you forgotten the brave attempt at industrial relations reform - the Industrial Relations Act 1971 (link) - which was well meant but which ended in farce? When it was repealed by Wislon's government, they left ACAS untouched and reinforced rights against unfair dismissal.

For the avoidance of doubt let us not forget the hand that Arthur Scargill played Re: Maggie!
Oh, yes - that windbag made Wormtongue Thatcher seem almost moderate.

Anyone interested in a serious look at the situation pre and post Thatcher, there is some informative stuff here.

I am not quite as vocal as Cloggy with regards to Maggie ...is he a Yorkshire man by any chance?

She really was divisive and while not glad she is dead I will not miss her

I think it mad though that most of the people who "celebrated" in London this weekend were too young to remember her
