Re: Clear the snow off your car

Chief Constable of Yorkshire (might be Hull ??) just been on radio & confirmed all these are rumours from "Urban Myths" & they wouldn't waste their time with more important issues to deal with

Re: Clear the snow off your car

Reg numbers and lights need to be clear of snow as they are MUSTs in the highway code and you have to comply with those by law.

The rest is guidance - though common sense is to brush the car down before heading off.

Anyway further to Turbs post ....

HUMBERSIDE Police has been made aware of bogus text messages being sent to people in the region. Roads Policing Inspector Graham Johnstone has made several radio appearances to give both driving guidance and to squash this rumour.
The text messages claim to have been sent by Humberside Police and relate to the prosecution of drivers with excessive snow on their roofs.
Humberside Police has not sent this text message out and it is not the sort of text message the force would send.
However Humberside Police urges all drivers to drive with care and ensure their vehicle is roadworthy before setting out.

If there is an excessive amount of snow on a vehicle's roof it could cause visibility problems if it shifts down over the windscreen of the vehicle or cause problems to other road users if it lands on their vehicle. Such a vehicle could be classed as being in a dangerous condition. There have been no reports this week of anyone being prosecuted in relation to this.
The force has the following winter driving advice:
Keep your vehicle's lights, windows and mirrors clean and free from ice and snow, keep your battery fully charged, add anti-freeze to the radiator and winter additive to the windscreen washer bottles, make sure wipers and lights are in good working order and check that tyres have plenty of tread depth and are maintained at the correct pressure. Clear the snow from your vehicle's roof.
Take into account the fact that it can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road. Drive slowly, allowing extra room to slow down and stop.
In foggy conditions, drive very slowly using dipped headlights. Use fog-lights if visibility is seriously reduced, but remember to switch them off when visibility improves.
Remember in wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads.

Don't believe everything you read on Facebook, or in emails....or text messages lol.
