      Employment

      2 The Economy:
      Jobs, Enterprise & Skills
The overarching goal of UKIP’s policies on jobs, enterprise and skills is to promote a new vibrant culture of producing goods and the
services related to them. Our policies will create more skilled jobs and more innovation while eliminating the current massive trade deficit which threatens to cripple our economy and future prosperity. UKIP will:
      · Stimulate private and public investment in Britain’s manufacturing base. UKIP will
generate approximately one million new skilled jobs - 500,000 in manufacturing itself and a similar number in the supply of materials and services. The five planned long-term
      programmes are:
      1) A 10-year enhanced defence equipment programme with an additional £4 billion p.a. on top of the currently-budgeted £8 billion p.a.
      2) A 25-year programme of building nuclear power stations that will provide Britain with 50% of its future electricity demand. This will cost on average of £3.5 billion p.a.
      3) A comprehensive programme of flood protection and coastal defences to cost £30 billion over 10 years. Some 25% of this money would be spent on highly-exportable pump valves and control equipment
      4) A transport investment programme centred on high-speed rail lines, reopened railways, new bypasses, road improvements and port
and airport links. The lion’s share of this investment would go to British-based firms
      5) A prison building programme with a
      particular emphasis on modern off-site
manufacture. This programme will be structured so that British manufacturing firms are well placed to win a substantial share of the systems and components work
      · Introduce ‘Production Enterprise Centres’ (PECs) across the UK to support companies in research, design, prototyping and marketing. These would provide small and medium-sized enterprises with the skills they need to enter domestic and export markets from which they are currently excluded
      · Denationalise universities and further
education (FE) colleges by replacing the
present complex systems of grants and loans with ‘Student Vouchers’ and ‘Training Vouchers’ to be issued to every citizen at the age of 18. These vouchers will be paid by the student to the college or university and equal ‘Basic Cash Benefit’ (See Welfare & Social Security, below). Individuals will be able to use the vouchers at any time in their adult life. Universities and FE colleges will function as independent charities, responsible only for their curricula and performance, and accountable only to their students
      · Abolish costly EU hindrances on businesses such as carbon cap schemes, emissions
trading, landfill taxes and renewable subsidies
      · Bring Britain in line with our major
competitors by amending the UK Takeover Code to prevent foreign interests from gaining control of strategic British companies in sectors such as defence and energy

        Law

UKIP will ensure the British people have a government with the will to punish those who threaten and harm them. We believe victims’ rights are more important than the rights and comfort of criminals. It is time to implement forthright law and order policies and to adopt zero tolerance on crime. UKIP will:
        · Make the police democratically accountable, by introducing directly-elected County Police Boards who can appoint and dismiss Chief Constables. These Boards will ensure the police listen to local people when setting policing priorities rather than blindly following politically correct Home Office diktats. UKIP demands a serious return to beat policing
        · Scrap the misconceived Human Rights Act. This will make Britain safer by removing obstacles that prevent the deportation of dangerous Imams, terror suspects and criminals to countries where they are wanted for trial. This policy is in line with the UK’s current prisoner exchange and extradition treaties. UKIP will also halt European moves to give prisoners the vote
        · Ensure sentences mean what they say: life must mean life
        · Double prison places through better use of existing prisons and a substantial programme of new prison building. UKIP will also end the scandal of early releases and weak sentencing. This will cost approximately £2bn p.a. in contrast to the cost of crime, estimated by the Home Office at £45bn p.a.
        · Rebalance the law to protect residents who seek to defend their own homes, families or property against intruders
        · Introduce a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ policy to deal with persistent offenders and make our streets safer for the public
        · Withdraw from the European Arrest Warrant scheme which allows innocent British citizens to be summarily extradited, even on offences that do not exist in the UK. We will reintroduce the need to prove the case for extradition before British judges based on prima facie evidence. UKIP strongly opposes plans for a new
        European Public Prosecutor
        · Allow binding national referenda on controversial public law and order issues that are outside party politics. The public must have the final say
        · Introduce ‘Boot Camps’ for young offenders to stop them spiralling into a life of crime
        · Abolish the politically correct and under-performing Crown Prosecution Service, returning to local police prosecutions

Hmm, I read somwhere a few days ago, UKIP are up for introducing capital and criminal
Corporal punishment, Im sorry if you all hate me for it but I kind of believe in that J however to me this doesn’t entirely add up,
They firstly tal about being able to get rid of a lot of immigrants through deportation, which would save millions etc etc, but then they are talking about doubling prison sizes which would cost millions. Kind of contradictory saying imigrants are taking up a lot of spaces but then needing to upgrade.....Anway not convinced by these either....NEXT...

Actually out of the 'big' three I am drawn towards the Lib Dems for a few reasons:

They are 'talking' about bank charges - would be better if they would promise to repay them though.

Making certain 'benefits' means tested - lets hope they stick by that eh

Increase the tax threshold to £10k - I'd be more impressed if they made it £15k

Not rolling out 'the wife' as some kind of appendage to appeal to the family votes - Nick Cleggs wife is still working her own job and good for her. Christ there's Sam Cam who they are making out to be the next holy mother, she is only pregnant it is not a flaming miracle, women of the world have babies all the time and hold down jobs ffs, oh and there's Sarah Brown who quite frankly looks like a sack of sh it tied up in the middle and is in dire need of a makeover.

Cutting down on NHS pen pushers - about flaming time and get more nurses and doctors, oh and by the way its about time they stopped them going back and forth to work in their uniforms, oh and popping outside for a quick smoke too, there's nothing worse than laying ill in hospital with a nurse hovering over you stinking of ciggies, especially if you have a breathing condition.

I'm still not totally convinced by them so am reserving final judgement till I've done more reading.

                Re: General Election 2010 Thread

Let me make this as clear as possible. A vote for the Lib Dems, or indeed any other minority party (because that is what the Lib Dems are, a minority party) is a vote for Gordon Brown and Labour and we all know where that has got us during the last 13 years.

It is a two horse race and has been since 1922, when the last Liberal PM left No 10 and he was only there because Asquith, the Prime Minister of the wartime coalition Government lost the confidence of the House and, with the help of the Conservatives and Labour, David Lloyd George replaced Asquith as Prime Minister. However, in the summer of 1922, Lloyd George was involved in a scandal involving the selling of knighthoods and peerages (now where have we heard that recently?) and in October, the Conservatives withdrew from the coalition and Lloyd George was forced to resign.

Recently I read that Harry Potter star, Daniel Radcliffe, is acting as an advisor to Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, for the upcoming general election. Apparently the pair met in December and are in regular phone contact. Radcliffe has promised to support the party publicly, to attract young voters.

Firstly, somebody should tell Daniel that 10 year-olds can't vote.

Secondly, if he gets the Lib Dems into power, then he really is a ****ing wizard!

For all those who have claimed on this thread that the Conservatives make the rich richer and the poor poorer, they should read the Government's own report which states that the divide between rich and poor is greater after 13 years of Labour rule than at any time since the Second World War.

In short, if you want Brown and his grinning band of fools out, then vote for the only party who can achieve that but if you cannot bring yourself to vote for the Conservatives, then don’t bother voting at all, because none of the others can get in, you will simply dilute the remaining votes and Brown will remain where he is.

Finally and I know I mentioned that there would not be a hung Parliament on the previous page, I have to admit, the idea is growing on me. I'd even consider learning to knit, if I could watch.

Crikey Cet you do paint a bleak picture, so what your saying is its a choice between two and neither of them are worth my vote really.
As far as a hung parliament goes, I've no experience of one so have no idea what would happen in that situation, in fact it concerns me that they'd spend so much time fighting between themselves instead of getting on with the job in hand.

Now I have to do even more reading and thinking who to put my cross against on the 6th May.

Oh how I wish Michele Mone (Ultimo), Anita Roddick (Body Shop), Richard Branson (Virgin) or even Alan Sugar were running for Prime Minister it would make all so simple for me they at least have a good track record for running succesful businesses.

Someone would make a fortune if Anita Roddick ran for PM - she died in 2007.

Having said that, does anyone have any proof that dear old Gordy is actually a living being?

                        Re: General Election 2010 Thread

Questions I have - is there any party absolutely strong enough to re-think the benefits system.

I would like to know the average figure paid out to the unemployed ( not sick) per person per annum.

Can the government not create jobs with this money?

I know when my OH was made redundant in total we were receiving £15000 approx in benefits / school meals / help with mortgage interest etc.

He was quite happy when offered a job eventually to take £3000 less pa just to get back into work.

Why can the monies not be re-distributed to local councils to provide jobs in the community?

Also I think I am right in thinking in the states they withdrew benefits housing assistance to under age pregnant girls. They gave something like 2-3 years clear warning ( plenty of time to avoid pregnancy!) and the pregnancy rate dropped dramatically. Families were expected to support the girls together with charities.

I have a niece who is working at 4 jobs to try and rent a small housing association flat with her boyfriend and another relative who has got a 16 year old pregnant and they are being given accomodation with rent paid. where is the fairness in that?

I think on reading the general policies there is not enough clear difference between the two parties for people to distinguish clearly what they stand for. Especially for first time voters who have not been through previous recessions.

Can anyone tell me on the conservative policy regarding care for the elderly where the one off payment of £8000 is suposed to come from for those on lowl incomes ( although I agree some new policies in this area are urgenly needed)

Well I must thank Amy and Cet for a most enlightening discussion on this subject in chat last night, thanks guys xxx

Now I wonder if you all remember that before Christmas there was a Facebook campaign to stop Simon Cowell's X Factor winner getting the no. 1 spot, well guess what the same people have started another campaign to get the Lib Dems voted in, so I'm thinking considering the fact that we are in a techno world now and that they succeeded with the campaign before Christmas, what does anyone think the chances are of this campaign succeeding ?

It will take much more than a Facebook campaign to get them elected.
