IMHO this would be the best direction at the moment. There will be documents relating to this.
It's not just BT sugesting this-orange,plus-net and others all have links on their web-sites showing the procedure.

The risk element of carrying out this operation is greater than the risk of exposure to the cable, IMHO. The fact that people may need to move furniture, may not have a screwdriver so supplement with a bread-knife or indeed are not physically able to do it are the major factors. People may feel themselves pressured into doing it because of an impending bill from BT to send out an engineer.

It would be interesting to find out what they suggest doing when the face-plate is NOT of the test socket type.....do they have the same approach? You have one at home, bill...

      Re: BT's dangerous suggestion.

I asked when they phoned me today and they still would "advise" people to do this but have to advise of possible charges if they send out an engineer, they still could not provide a satisfactory answer when I asked them what if I had been unable to do this.
In my case it WAS BTs line that was at fault, got a new hub, box on the wall and £30 as a "goodwill" on my account.:tinysmile_aha_t:

sounds to me like " we could send an engineer, but it will cost you. you could try this and it will save you £xxx....?"

WRONG. Cohearstment is a word that springs to mind.

              Re: BT's dangerous suggestion.

I HAVE JUST DONE A LITTLE EXPERIMENT WITH BT AND THEIR FAULT REPORTING

XXXX XXr : Hello. I'm XXXXXXX XXXr . Thanks for that information, I'll check it and get back to you in a moment.

              XXXX : Hello MILLITANT
              MILLITANT: afternoon

              MILLITANT:
do you have my question to hand ??
              XXXX XXX : Good afternoon

MILLITANT: can you tell me what is included within the telephone line rental to BT, such as
              fee to rent the line
              maintenance
              fault fixing etc

XXX XXXX : Yes thats correct, we do have line rental and we do charge for the service at £14.60 per month. The line rental means a basic line that our customer have with BT and all the faults in the line are dealt by BT for free of charges

XXX XXXX : We do refund at the time of fault in the connection

              MILLITANT: question

              XXXX XXX : Sure MILLITANT

              MILLITANT:

i have a fault on my line, i have been advised to unplug the face of the socket and attach the phone line behind the plate, i am short sighted and disabled, cant bend down, I NEED AN ENGINEER TO COME OUT BUT BT WILL NOT AND KEEP ASKING ME TO UNPLUG FACE PLATE

XXXX XXXX : I do understand this, however will that be okay if I call you and connect you to our faults team who will be able to fix an engineer visit for you. Please advise me on which number shall I call you?

              MILLITANT:

I will phone BT again, no disrespect but i have had promises all the time, so to confirm, their is no problem for an engineer to come out and fix the fault, and i will not get charged

XXX XX : Yes sure MILLITANT

              MILLITANT
              :
many thanks for your time, i will give BT one last chance then i will pass it up to the chief exec mr ian livingstone, thank you

              XXXX XXX : Sure MILLITANT

That sounds really patronising, it's not supposed to - it's great you have it on record! :beagle:

I pay my line rental to TalkTalk, and refuse to have owt to do with BT since being scammed by them for £1K+ a few years back. As long as I have a connection, I'll do any other work myself, as I would refuse to have a BT engineer in my house unless it was absolutely essential.
