Hey, my boyfriend has been hit by scottish power too! he had a bar and restaurant and scottish power cut his electricity supply because the previous owner owed them money. he has now lost his business and as you know, trying to talk to anyone at scottish power is impossible, he gets the phone put down on him. Thing is, they know they haven't supplied his business since 2006, he only bought it in 2007 but still they say they want the money in CASH!!! we don't know what to do, he now owes a lot of money to people as the business has been closed for 3 months as scottish power wont turn it back on til they have the cash. Not even a cheque!! help pls!!!:help:

He should stop trying to telephone them and write to them with details of when he bought the business. He is not responsible for the previous occupiers bills, regardless of what Scottish Power say.

Thank you, the only thing is he didn't recieve any bills or notification of the power being turned off as he didn't have an account with them so no envelope or anything came to him. When he spoke to the customer dept yesterday they said they have not supplied his company since 2006 so couldn't help. When he said that they had turned his power off they said they know nothing about it although previously a duty manager told him it had been going on for 3 years, he had only been there 15months at that point. I will write to them as suggested, thank you

Did you know that they were the supplier or did you know or were you paying another supplier when you took over the business?

He was paying another supplier. They were even in credit with the electricity company they were paying since they opened the business. The contract with scottish power had been cancelled by the previous owner before my botfriend bought the business.

Have they stopped supplying you then if the business has had to go belly up over this? I am not sure how one supplier can cut you off for a contract that they are no longer a part of.

No, we are not sure either. It's really hard to get any sense out of anyone. The woman who had the power cut off works for scottish power but the company he was paying the bills to was E4B.

yes we have phoned them and they said to contact british gas which we have done but they haven't managed to update their system yet so they don't know what's going on either at the minute

I have spoken to consumer direct and they have told me that it was a genuine mistake made by Scottish Power and that the debt was from the previous owner. A genuine mistake that made my boyfriend lose his business!!!

How do you know that it is scottish power that cut off the electricity supply to his business?

What communications in writing do you have with them. I think you need to get him to do a full subject access request on scottish power and on E4B/BG and find out exactly what has gone on.

The priority is to get the supply turned back on. 3 months is a long time to have been turned off for.

Get all your correspondance together and make a list and post it up here then write to the top dogs at whoever cut you off and enclose copies of statements of the bills being paid to E4B/BG.

If it is a ''genuine'' error then he should be entitled to compensation, although I think a bearing on it will be the reasonale proportionate effort he put in to sort it out.

Consumer direct managed to find out that it was scottish power i guess through their data base. I've never heard of a subject access request?How do i go about getting that? Sorry...

Unfortunately, there is no point in getting the power supply turned on as he had to sell his business as a result of this. He contacted the woman who turned it off almost on a daily basis trying to explain to her that it was not his bill but she would not listen, she even told him she didn't want to talk to him, humg up on him, went away on holiday for 2 weeks without telling him and was generally very rude and unhelpful. Consummer direct said that it was a debt from the previous owner but that it was a genuine mistake. When he tried to contact Scottish power they kept saying that they had not supplied his business since 2006 and it was nothing to do with them and know nothing about it but this is apparently because they sold the debt and so don't have it on their database anymore. E4B credited his account as he was in credit with them with his electricity but as he has sold the business, he cant get the bills from the building. The new owners are still unable to get the electricity back on now because of the lady at scottish power. If i ring Scottish power and and E4B and ask for a full subject access request would that give us all the information? Thanks for the help!

just checked, I have to send a letter don't i for the S.A.R and a £10 cheque? Is there a standard letter i can down load or do i just write to them asking for full subject access? Sorry if am being a bit slow, never done this before...:embarassed:
