No it's not that one. I'd rather not mention details until I've exhausted the bait. I'm trying a tactic that's never worked but I won't give up until it does. I'm relying on two characteristics of scammers - greed and their mistrust of the people they work with. In scam baiting terms, even if they don't believe me now, if they are apparently losing money in a scenario that I have invented, and it happens in many apparently unassociated circumstances, then I can make it become a reality in their minds and pull them in to a fictional world I have created and I can exploit it.

It's the bank account I'm after, but I might as well do something more than just finish the bait at that point. If the scammer believes that the money has gone somewhere it gives me a lever simply by making them believe that the money is real.

Autotrader UK are getting good at this. One hack was removed before I posted it up today and another one I did get posted up was removed within five minutes.

I'm impressed, but I'll still be checking. I have another bank account that I've reported and I'll post details once it's complete.

Buster Jack - I don't consider the problem with fraudulent adverts on Autotrader UK are any greater or more significant than those appearing on eBay or all the many other ad sites - I just happen to specialise in dealing with fraudulent adverts there because it's easier to track what the scammers are doing, how to flag them up efficiently and effectively if I stick to one site.

AT UK have been removing fraudulent adverts very quickly over the past few days which is helpful, but I'll keep my eye on that situation.

I think I understand why the scammers have been performing hacks of dealer log-ins and inserting low priced bogus adverts with no method to contact them. It seems that their tactic is to come back later and insert the bogus contact details because I've noticed examples of sites going through the two stage transformation as I've been logging them. I presume that they hope that they won't be picked up if they do that but they misunderstand how I pick them and I've been flagging them even without bogus contact details anyway. Once I spot them then I post them up with evidence.

Buyer in online scam loses thousands left to her by dad
A YOUNG woman whose dad died in tragic circumstances was conned out of her inheritance by online scammers.
Olivia set her sights on a Fiat 500 advertised for sale on website Gumtree and began negotiating with what she thought was the website's staff.

Another one to add to the massive list of victims. Her story is tragic, but not as tragic as the fact that this fraud is taking place on an industrial scale with every victim's life materially affected. I recall a victim from SW who had been intending to buy a camper van to take their disabled child on holiday - and so it goes on.

Is there any chance that the name of this thread could be slightly modified? On Facebook I'm getting a lot of questions about AutoTrader and basically I tell people to come to THIS thread, but its title is slightly misleading. Could the word AutoTrader be added to it?

AT UK are red hot at removing the fraudulent adverts tonight. I'll give the AT UK site a chance to settle and then perform a sweep later.

This is nice to see but let's see the same effort for an extended period.

That was interesting. Undoubtedly AT UK were removing fraudulent adverts at an impressive rate but the scammers weren't going to be stopped. They still achieved three dealer hacks as well as individual fraudulent adverts and they also hacked several dealer accounts simply as an act of vandalism as far as I could see. It seemed to be purely malicious as the same photos were posted on different accounts and appearing side by side in the listings it was obvious.

It's the second item covered and begins after about eleven and a half minutes and is an absolutely standard scam by the criminal gang we know so well and who have devastated so many victims.

I've just this minute came across this news report

Travel website Viator suffered a compromise of payment card data on 2 September, 2014, and confirmed that some customer credit cards had been used for fraudulent purposes.


In a statement issued on 19 September, Viator (a subsidiary of TripAdvisor) warned users who have created a Viator account that their payment card details, email address, password, and Viator "nickname" may be compromised.

Viator said it is notifying "approximately 1.4 million Viator customers, who had some form of information potentially affected by the compromise."

… and back to bank accounts used in fraud.

£104k assembly cash paid into fraudulent bank account

The money was paid over a four-month period by the Assembly Commission, which is the corporate body for the National Assembly for Wales.

He said it was "highly unlikely" the commission would recover the money.

Mr Adams said they have since scheduled a meeting to discuss possible future legislative changes when it comes to this type of fraud.

The underlying problem, core to this type of fraud and fraudulent adverts, is the existence of many thousands of bank accounts opened for no other purpose than to facilitate fraud. There is a serious risk of the banking system losing credibility if people lose faith in the use of the banking system due to the massive proliferation of these bank accounts.

The worrying thing is that fraudsters have barely scratched the surface of what is possible by exploiting this weakness in the banking system.
