Re: Paying council tax while living abroad

Is it just a CT bill you've received? is there contact details on there you can use to talk to the council?

Re: Paying council tax while living abroad

I am in tuch with the team leader. In fact, i paid an amount of the council tax to drop the court summons. What;s next is the rest which hope to sort out with arrangements in the new year. I am just wondering how the class f puts me at a disadvantage?

If you've been claiming class f reduction when you shouldn't have been (because the house was occupied) then theoretically the council could charge you with CT fraud ... you need to be very careful with what you're doing imo

you'll need to make sure it's still not being claimed ... the council may not be willing to let a 'slip' like this go

You say the house is going to be put in someone elses' name? Was this set out in the will? There may be much more to sort out than just a CT bill if this has been going on for 5yrs

Yes it is going to be transferred alongside me. I don't think it is still being claimed. It said the account was transferred to an executors account with a class F exemption, and a search on the land registry found my name (the other partner) so they billed me. I settled under half of what they billed..

Re: Paying council tax while living abroad

Was the property still tenanted when the class F exemption was applied? you might find that the council will 'back bill' for that period as well (if they find out that it was applied wrongly).

As they cannot collect the CT from the deceased (or his estate) I think you'll find that they will chase you for the whole amount ... you need to talk to the council, and most likely get some legal advice too.
