• Paying council tax while living abroad

I have been living abroad for 20 years, but part own a property in the UK.
A relative was the other owner and he died. For 5 years since his death, there was no bill from the council, and living abroad I wasn't sure of the status for expats. NOw we've received a sudden billing for 5 years. I was told to pay on demand. We received a class F exemption. It seems like the full amount , should there be a reduction on council tax for expats? Are there exemptions?

No it hasn't. It has been occupied by three people, and half the property remained in the deceased name..
the other half has been in my name..

surely the people living in the property would be liable for CT? - https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ta...x/council-tax/
Usually, the person living in a property will be the liable person, but sometimes it will be the owner of the property who will be liable to pay.

The owner will be liable if:
the property is in multiple occupation, for example, a house shared by a number of different households who all pay rent separately; or
the people who live in the property are all under the age of 18; or
the property is accommodation for asylum seekers; or
the people who are staying in the property are there temporarily and have their main homes somewhere else; or
the property is a care home, hospital, hostel or women's refuge.

So even if i live abroad, someone has to pay council tax in my house and there's no exemption for expat property owners?

I believe the Government stopped allowing an exemption for ex-pats a few years ago ... however, CT would have to be paid (as per my link above) if the property was being lived in anyway. Can you tell us more about the previous/current tenants? Are they over 18? Students? Asylum seekers? etc...

you could try this - https://www.gov.uk/council-tax/worki...ur-council-tax - although I still think that CT would be payable on the property.
Maybe Crazy council will be able to advise?

Is there a case against the council for billing me 5 years late? Why did they wait 5 years and then bill at once?

Did they know your address? Did they send CT bills to the tenants? It might be an idea to email them :noidea:

Was the CT bill sent to the tenant 5yrs late? Were they not registered at the address?

Hi,

Were these people occupying the property via a tenancy agreement and paying rent? If so they as the residents should have paid the Council Tax, unless this was included in their rent payments.
