  • United utiites court letter

    Hi

Just after a bit of advice regarding a court letter I have received on behalf of United Utilities over an amount of money I owe them (its over four grand). I have basically, over the years, been burying my head in the sand and prioritising other bills and stupidly only paying them every now and again. I have ignored their correspondence and feel completely to blame for this. I am in the process of completing the form to admit liability and requesting time to pay and making an offer of £50.00 a month moving forward and then will start to pay what I should be paying in the first place.

I know this is completely my fault and wouldnt blame people for thinking you got yourself into this mess so get yourself out of it but I just wondered if there was any advice as i dont want to do the wrong thing>

    Hi LESLIE48

    Try not to worry.

    Is it a Court Claim?

    Are you a 'vulnerable' person?

When factors like ill health, unemployment, separation or divorce make it more difficult to manage household finances, we want to do all we can to help our customers during these difficult times by having a range of support schemes in place.

      Hi

No I wouldnt say i'm vulnerable I've just got myself into a bit of a mess. My outgoings are quite high and I have stupidly ignored this bill over the years. I think the right thing to do is to admit liability and ask for a chance to pay it off. However I dont want to do the wrong thing and end up in a bigger mess. Thank you so much for getting back to me

You need to Acknowledge the Claim, that will give you an extra 14 days, 28 in total.

It might be an idea to send them a Subject Access Request, they will give you all the information on your account, they have 30 days to respond. Get the email address for the Data Protection Team at United Utilities, email it to them. The information you get will show your payments, so you can make sure their claim is for the correct amount.

Brilliant. I've completed that online. Just to be clear that doesnt mean i'm contesting it does it? Its basically buying me some time and i can check that its exactly what I owe? To be honest it will be as I am to blame. So would I make them an offer at a later date? Sorry for so many stupid questions and thanks again for all your help

Exactly, you're not contesting, but checking that what they are claiming is correct, also the court will only ask you to pay what you can afford each month, if that's £1 so be it.

I don't know what you're options are exactly, others here might be better to advise. But maybe asking them to reduce the amount owed with with 'Without Prejudice' letters will help you to maintain any potential payment arrangement. So reducing the £4,000. The last thing both parties want is you to get into a 'pickle' again.
