It also requires a change in mindset back to seasonal eating habits. The availability of everything, all year round is a mixed blessing for our economy.

That would also require ability and effort, sad to say they are qualities that seem to be missing nowadays, when I was at school we were taught 'Domestic Science' which included cooking, cleaning and running a home, a lot of people now don't know how to prepare and cook a meal, they think that the fairy arrives overnight to keep the home clean, then of course its the got to have it all syndrome, we had to save to get things in the house, I bet some of you remember sitting on deck chairs until you could afford you're first three piece suit, its all so different now.

We had army blankets on our beds (itchy as hell). When I got married my Mum bought me the ex neighbours 'bedroom' set, dressing table, wardrobes and bedside tables lol..In my loft there is a big box full of stuff I have 'put by' for when kiddo leaves home, cutlery, kitchen utensils, towels, bed linen etc...used to be called the 'bottom drawer'. We have stuff from FIL's house that we have replaced our stuff with cos his was built to last.We have their dining table, cos it''s so much better than the one we had (and yes,Rob's been e-baying like crazy)

Have a lot more to say about this very interesting debate (!) but in the meantime - have tried to post many times and been squashed - take a look at this - they seem to be genuinely independent grassroots and to have forced mcdonalds and co to pay voluntary tax over olympics https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/tax-dodging-poll

I couldn't agree more Wales,,you get out what you give on this planet. If parents think sticking their kids in front of a screen 24/7 is going to produce a worldy wise adult they are sorely mistaken.

I couldn't agree more with you Wales, though in your case I bet you didn't actually only realise this when your wife became disabled, I bet it was already in your bloodstream.

Family time and finding perspective in the world is precisely why I went missing from LB's and the whole of the rest of the world for two weeks recently.

It was fantastic and we didn't go to anything that cost any money, we just took in the best of the world around us and the dog has lost an inch in length of each of his legs.

That is what life is all about, I totally agree.

                    Re: Super Tax @ 69%

It is true that when we were young life was much simpler. For example - we recycled everything - milk bottles put outside for collection, lemonade bottles taken back to the shop for thrupence apiece - socks darned, clothes mended, nothing wasted esp not food - the sunday roast recycled in different guises throughout the week. We were genuinely "green""!

But we were blissfully unaware of the inequality then and therefore able to be happy without the envy that we are invited into by every media portal shouting at us now (at our children) about what material piece of cr*p it is essential to have.

As for how to change government and the tax system in particular to make it fair - on top of the indisputable wisdom above re taxing the mega rich greedy corporations etc I think that those that need benefits should be taken out of the tax system - ie it should be either one or the other - make the tax threshold much higher and certainly don't tax benefits. For a start.
