  • Tax Credit paper renewal

    Today I called HMRC and queried if I had updated my new employer as of 28th Sept.

    I was asked if there were any changes other than my employer's name, I said "No, you already have me on xxx a year don't you?"

    "No!" Said the guy "We auto calculated your income at www (3k less). We did this on 1/4/18."

    I was confused, I had sent in my renewal pack, as per the last advisor's suggestion, and updated it to xxx per year. The next words chilled me.

    "We are encouraging people to renew online, so we are not updating paper renewal forms any more!"

    I have been getting tax credits for an income 3k too low since April, now I might owe an overpayment due to me not using the online service. I am absolutely dreading it!

    I am pretty sure this is illegal (anyone know?) but it might be worth calling HMRC if you have updated via the renewal pack and making sure it has been done!

    Once I voiced my unhappiness the guy changed his tune and said it was an oversight and a mistake, but he clearly told me, "We are not updating paper renewals any more!"

        yeh I literally used the envelope they sent me!

        I kicked off about the fact that every time I renew someone goes wrong with it and he said "Oh, well just renew online! We are promoting the online approach so we don't renew the paper forms anymore!"

        I didn't think it was legal for them to ignore paper forms? I'm dreading having to pay back an overpayment!

          As you're still in receipt of tax credits, your repayment will be actioned by reducing your credits;
          https://www.gov.uk/tax-credits-overp...ur-tax-credits

          I would also complain in writing to them (https://www.gov.uk/tax-credits-appea...nts/complaints)
          I'm sure you know how to complain SC
