If so it only goes to indicate that they're not serious about issuing proceedings and were just trying it on.

I would simply respond as follows:

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your help

Now had another response, asking for the complaint reference.

Shall I just tell them to refer to their client, stating that they should have all the facts and evidence before representing them.

Or is that just a lay person trying to be a lawyer :-)
