  • Compensation?

Hi all, was just wondering if anyone thinks it would be worthwhile me pursuing compensation against United Utilities?

What happened was someone who was living in a previous address i had lived at put a water bill in my name resulting in it being unpaid and a CCJ against me. What i find annoying is their policy to sign people up on the doorstep with no id required at all. I can only presume whoever did it had got my details from a letter that had been delivered. The other thing was the person who put the account in my name had spelt my name wrong and got my date of birth wrong which surprised me they were able to get a Judgement against me.

I feel United Utilities should be held responsible as they are the ones signing people up on doorsteps and allowing people to put accounts in other peoples names. As a result of this CCJ i have been forced to accept very high interest loans and credit cards which i needed for my business.

After a few months of contact with them and me having to prove i didnt live at the address at the time, they have finally sent me a letter admitting fault and have applied to get the CCJ set aside.

Should i just be grateful the CCJ is to be removed or should i be looking at taking it further?

    Thanks.

    Re: Compensation?

When did you realise you had a CCJ? Did it come from UU or a debt collector?

When did you complain to UU and how long has it taken to get this resolved?

      Re: Compensation?

It was when i kept getting refused for loans and credit cards i decided to check my credit report and saw the CCJ on it, unfortunately. I couldnt wait until it was removed as i needed the loan for work. The CCJ still hasn't been removed, they are in the process of applying to have it set aside. It has probably gone on for about 6 months but i have actually had the CCJ since December 2013 with even knowing. Thanks for the reply.

The CCJ was from a unpaid bill from United Utilities which was heard at Northampton court. Iam not sure if it involved bailiffs?

If you have evidence of provable loss specifically caused by the erroneous judgment yes raise a formal complaint with UU, don't go through customer services they wont have the knowledge or authority to do anything.

Get the name of the CEO/MD and write to them direct, use signed for post and check signature and delivery date.

Thanks for the reply nem. I have proof of the higher interest loans i have had to take out because of poor credit and the failed loan applications with lower interest rates will be on my credit file. I have never had bad credit in my life and all my other credit accounts are always up to date and paid on time. I dont even think i have ever even made a late payment on anything and should have been able to get a bank loan. I will end up paying thousands in extra interest because of this incorrect CCJ.

Definitely a Formal Complaint to their CEO is the first step, outlining what has happened with credit apps etc. and seek a level of redress which is reasonable they may well not want this to go to a court claim the water industry's record of customer service is pretty dismal.

              Hi, thanks for the advice.

I emailed the CEO yesterday and got a reply within 1 hour then a phone call from the manager of Customer Relations. At least they havent just fobbed me off and it seems they are treating the matter seriously. Expecting another call today when the Custom Relations manager has had time to go through the case.

Hi, i recieved a phone call back and i told them i thought i should be compensated. They said they would discuss it then phone me back the next day which they did and offered me £200. They told me it was non negotiable and kinda put me under pressure i felt to accept. I have accepted the offer but as of now still havent recieved any payment. Should i send the cheque back if and when it arrives and hold out for more? Not sure what to do.

                Thanks.

And right on cue the cheque has just arrived in the post.

                Not sure what to do.
