  • Man worried about debts leapt to his death

    By Andy Whelan
A man jumped to his death from a dual carriageway bridge after visiting an accountant to discuss his debts.
Robert Howard had met with a loan company hours before he leapt off the footbridge just east of the A27 Shoreham flyover.
An inquest at Worthing today heard how the 29-year-old had struggled to repay two loans.

Mr Howard, of Bedford Row, Worthing, was also unhappy because he had moved house from Shoreham.

David Standing told how he witnessed Mr Howard, who was smoking a cigarette, let go of the metal railings and fall onto the road.

Police found Mr Howard's car near the spot he jumped from. The key was still in the ignition and his passport was inside.

Motorist Ameldia Joel was driving on the A27 and had to slam her foot on the brakes to stop her car from hitting Mr Howard's body.

The Sussex Police helicopter based less than half a mile away at Shoreham airport was sent to the scene.

Mr Howard was taken to Worthing Hospital where he died at 1.24pm, almost three and a half hours after jumping from the bridge.

Coroner's officer Lyn Ralfe said Mr Howard had attended an appointment in Portslade earlier that day to discuss his money worries.

She said: "He had two loans and one was at a high interest rate. He wanted to amalgamate the loans.

She added that friends said Mr Howard was quiet in the week leading up to his death but he had never before tried to kill himself.

West Sussex coroner Penelope Schofield said: "Having considered the evidence I propose to record the cause of death as multiple injuries with a verdict that the deceased took his own life."

Tonight Mr Howard's mother, Lesley Partridge, 55, of Greenwood Drive, Angmering, near Littlehampton, said her son had not discussed his financial problems with the family.

She said: "I miss him terribly. I had no idea he was in debt.

"He was my world because he was my only child. He was popular and well over 100 friends turned up for his funeral.

"It is hard to think I will never see or talk to him again."

Mr Howard, who was known as Herman to his friends, worked for Frosts Jaguar, starting as an apprentice and eventually becoming a senior motor technician.

His main hobby was building and flying radio controlled planes. He had also started taking flying lessons at Shoreham airport and hoped to get his pilot's licence.

Mr Howard's funeral took place at Worthing Crematorium in Horsham Road on January 24 and mourners went back to the Black Horse pub in High Street, Findon, near Worthing.

      This so awful.
I remember years ago the government reduced DHSS money and a few people committed suicide. After about a year it was found that the government had acted illegally and they had to refund the money.
Didn't help those that had died though!

It does sicken me when I hear rich people saying 'money doesn't buy happiness'. How many rich people either commit suicide because of having too much money, or give it all away?

I read this story and I remember a few times some hostile comments on charges forums becuase of the number of people who have committed suicide because of charges in general which, potentially, maybe shown to have been imposed unlawfully. People with debt have an emotional response to charges and they can get into a circle of charges. How may people will have killed themselves before the judgement is reached. A sad sad case for that person's family. R.I.P.

I can relate to this story as hubby has almost gone over the top on a few occasions lately, all are debt related and the closure of his HSBC business account and the worry that ensued.

But thank gooddness belonging to LB has helped tremendously and without this valuable support goodness knows where he would be right now.

It's a shocking story, what is it they always say if you are in trouble financially "go and talk to your bank" yeah right.

I feel for his family they must be going through hell.

Re: Man worried about debts leapt to his death

How terrible and desperate must he have been, to do this. to take his own life. My heart breaks for him and his family. Many people live with shame and become isolated, because they cannot talk about these matters. and who was the last contact he had with, the bank I do hope they will relect on their actions, well we can hope really.

I have been in the big black hole, desperate, not being able to talk to anyone about it. I never thought about killing myself, but did consider just getting in the car and running away, to don't know where, but when I looked at the faces of my children I couldn't.

Tuttsi, you are so right sites like legal beagles are in fact life savers. They turn victums into victors.

I am getting out of the black hole now having endless disputes with creditors and if they have not complied with the law, god help them.

I just wish someone who knew and could help, was on the bridge to talk to him

Re: Man worried about debts leapt to his death

This is really sad. I don't think it helps that lenders have got more and more agressive in recent years in chasing up debt, using a number of quite nasty psycological tactics when doing so. The fact is that there are plenty of diferent avenues to get help and sort out a debt situation - but as a previous poster pointed out - talking to your bank dosen't really help much. Seeing as how organistions like CAB are very, very busy (and unbeliebvably use volunteers) you can see how its hard for people to get help.

Forums like this one are very helpful though..........I can't help thinking that if he had found a site like this he might have seen that there are solutions available......

Got to agree with you alecmac18,before my daughter came back to live at home, she had tried to contact CAB who put her onto another organisation as she lived outwith their area and was just too busy to talk to her,she could never get hold of them, she tried a couple of the comapanies advertising on TV debt free in 5 years sort of thing, and was told they couldn't help her as she didn't have enough debt
She felt she was drowning in debt, and was feeling very desperate indeed, that's when I took over (she hid quite a lot of things from us so not to worry us) I finally sifted through the bags of unopened letters etc, and found it wasn't that bad,but bad enough for her,we have managed to come to agreement with all the priority debts and working my way through the rest.

I am just glad she eventually came to me with her problems goodness only knows what she would have done.
