  • Received letter from lowell about old O2 account.

Today i received a notice of assignment letter from lowell saying that they had bought the debt on 31/08/2012 from o2.

There has been no payment made since nov 2011 to O2 as a letter i got from O2 indicated.

Lowell now say that i owe £1126.

O2 have now deleted my account details and have written to tell me that i have to deal with lowell from now on as i have read about these people its the last thing i want to do.

Thing is im looking to get a mortgage next year and im worried that this will damage my credit rating and i wont be able to get credit.

Ive never had a letter like this before and ive got visions of debt collectors and even more letters harrasssing me turning up.

What would be the best thing to do in this situation ?

    Thanks

Did you have a dispute on your bill with O2 ? (ie. how come you stopped paying?) How much was the debt when you defaulted with O2?

More than likely you'll already have a marker on your credit file from O2 anyway, and to prevent it going further then, unless you have a serious dispute with O2, you should sort a payment arrangement out with Lowell now before it snowballs into a court claim or bankruptcy petition, which they are well known for trying.

Did you receive the notice of assignment only TODAY? For a debt sold 18 months ago?

The debt has been sold to Lowell, so O2 has no interest in it or reason to deal with it.

Have you checked your credit file? If you defaulted in 2011, chances, are, O2 would have already recorded a default. Was this bill for actual usage (calls/data) or for early cancellation of contract?

Debt collectors often threaten home visits but they hardly ever send someone round to your house. Even if they did, there's no reason you should have to talk to them.

This depends on whether you have a reason to dispute the debt and/or the amount or not. If you do, you should write to Lowell exposing your reasons for the dispute, otherwise you can make an affordable repayment offer.

I've had no letters about this since yesterday. Not sure how they have got my address but I have moved a year ago. I never got any letters from O2 saying I owed money and now they can't provide me with any proof of payments made on the account.

I cancelled the phone as when I moved in 2011 I couldn't get any service in my flat so I got pay as u go phone on another network and hadn't heard anything since.
