  • Snotty letter off Co-Op Bank

I have a basic bank account with them and accidentally went £2 overdrawn recently - i've been with them a few years now and that's never happened before, it was a genuine oversight on my part and was rectified immediately.
The other day i received a really odd/snotty/to the point letter off them saying my conduct on the account was unacceptable, i was not allowed an overdraft and should the "misuse" of my account continue they will shut it down = WTF??? talk about a complete and utter over reaction or what?

    Especially as it's THEIR fault.
After all basic accounts are not meant to be able to be overdrawn.
Someone's messed up their systems to allow that to happen

It's a computer generated letter and will never have touched a human hand. The Co-op work on a three strikes and you're out policy for their basic accounts.

same old, same old with them. Templated load of crap.
Was the date on the letter AFTER you had rectified it?

Did not notice the date to be honest as i so flabbergasted by the tone of the letter that it got tore up and in bin - i assume it was sent as soon as my evil/deliberate/malicious act was committed? lol
I had made a payment on my card recently for £13.60 and withdrew the rest of what was available in branch - i had thought i had left a few pound in for T-Mobile to do one of their "take money out/put it straight back in again" checks on me whilst trying to sign up for one of their services recently.
The letter stated at the top that "they had decided to pay the £13.60 for me" but it had took me overdrawn (i'm thinking T-Mobile did not put the £2 back in straight away perhaps?) anyway as soon as they did - the overdraft breach was rectified and i was back to normal etc....
Even so, the tone of their letter took me by surprise to say the least!

Also, you will find that you've almost certainly been charged a fee for the honour of going overdrawn. If you phone them and explain that this has never happened before and you're not happy, they will refund this.

Why will they charge him? The account is a basic one with no overdraft facility which most banks DO NOT charge if the account exceeds the no overdraft rule.

The letter did not mention anything about a charge & i would be very surprised if they did for the mere sake of £2 and that its never happened before - anyway if another letter does come through the post saying i will be charged, it will be fought against of course.....

They are likely to charge him because they charged me twice for doing the same thing, and explained the three strikes within a certain time period and you're out rule.

I imagine if one branch does it, it would be company policy.

DS Love the flying pigs, but again in both cases with me they refunded the charge.

Ok, their T&C's do not say that and I've used the one for the basic account they have. You can be charged for an unpaid item but a card payment is not an unpaid item therefore no overdraft charges are due(I would add that even if the unpaid item was charged there would still be no charges for specifically being in an unauthorised overdraft). The 3 strikes rule must be an internal thing.

I love the Co-op Bank - they are a laugh a minute. They sent me two "agreements" that came out completely black from their microfiche!! They were just pages of ink blotches. They also sent me two Default Notices that are unlawful. All their DNs are unlawful. They don't allow the 14 days to remedy the breach and they don't change this in spite of being told about it. Their reply is that they have been approved by their "legal experts" - Kev in the 4th floor lav again. To cap it all they then charged off the accounts and sold them on - a complete shot up the a%se. Thank you Co-op for your sheer stupidity. It's wonderful to behold. They are also very good at amalgamating 2 or more agreements into one new agreement - one the customer neither applied for nor signed for and the old agreements are paid off from this new agreement. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Whatever they T&C's say, they definitely charged me for my basic account, but equally gave them back again. It was about two years ago now, so possibly things have changed.

They can charge you an UNPAID item for the account but they cannot charge you for using an OVERDRAFT that you are not allowed to have on the account. Caspar, there is a difference in the charges we are talking about since I am not arguing with you that you can be charged on the account but simply what you can be charged for.
