  • Default need help

We took out a loan in 2013 of 1500 for a sofa it was in my husbands name. The payments came out of our joint account used for utilities. We moved to USA for three years and I think I accidently cancelled the direct debit by accident. in 2016 the payments stopped. Now as we were abroad we didn't realise my mistake until last week when we applied for a mortgage now back in the UK and was shown a default in my husband name. After investigation it seems the direct debit was stopped. We never recieved a default notice as we were abroad and we had thousands in account to pay still. I am feeling sick as my husband has done nothing and his name is marked for six years meaning our family can't get a mortgage. The day we found out the mistake we paid the £600 owed to the debt collection agency. Please can someone help me to clear my husband name for a mistake I made.

If the default has been paid off it should be marked as satisfied on the credit file and the amount shown as £0. Within a few months of the settlement the impact of the default will reduce. If that's the only issue on the credit file then a decent mortgage broker should be able to work around it - I have 5/6 defaults on my credit file that were finally all marked as satisfied in May 2018 and got full mortgage offer in December 2018.

What was happening to your post while you were in the US ?
