I decided to cancel my home insurance policy on 4th January, and duly notified the provider who looked at the account and said there would be a small cancellation fee. Fair enough, I thought, so I cancelled the DD. A few days later, on the 8th, I received a Notice of Default email. stating that the DD had been attempted to be taken, and obviously failed. I had until 21st January to settle, or further action would be taken. The DD was obviously in the process of being applied for, and though it hadn't left my bank account, I thought it was safe to cancel the policy. Not so.
When I called them, I asked why I was told that I was liable for a cancellation payment, and then a notice of default is served. To keep things tidy, I paid the final balance due.
My concern is that the provider has left a mark on my credit file, and they have essentially, in a non-committal manner, confirmed that they have. My question is: have they acted prematurely?
My credit file, as of today, shows nothing adverse with respect to them, but I know that it can take another month before these things actually appear.
