  • Home Insurance provider notified of of default after policy cancellation

I decided to cancel my home insurance policy on 4th January, and duly notified the provider who looked at the account and said there would be a small cancellation fee. Fair enough, I thought, so I cancelled the DD. A few days later, on the 8th, I received a Notice of Default email. stating that the DD had been attempted to be taken, and obviously failed. I had until 21st January to settle, or further action would be taken. The DD was obviously in the process of being applied for, and though it hadn't left my bank account, I thought it was safe to cancel the policy. Not so.

When I called them, I asked why I was told that I was liable for a cancellation payment, and then a notice of default is served. To keep things tidy, I paid the final balance due.

My concern is that the provider has left a mark on my credit file, and they have essentially, in a non-committal manner, confirmed that they have. My question is: have they acted prematurely?

My credit file, as of today, shows nothing adverse with respect to them, but I know that it can take another month before these things actually appear.

Send them a SAR request, they have 30 days to provide all the in formation on the account.
There will be notes on your account regards what they told you. Also make a formal complaint
in writing, follow the complaints procedure on their website. Once you get a final response, if
your still not happy with their response, lodge a complaint with the FOS. Make sure you get
    Proof of Postage.

As the default notice gave you until 21 January before further action was taken, and as you paid the balance owing well before that date, any entry on your credit file should be complained to the provider and, if that is unsuccessful, to FOS.

All opinions expressed are based on my personal experience. I am not a lawyer and do not hold any legal qualifications.

        UPDATE.

The insurer has upheld my complaint. They also state that they have requested to remove any mark made on my credit file. They say they cannot guarantee the outcome of this, but will update me once they 'have more information.' They have awarded me £XX as a goodwill gesture for distress and inconvenience,

I'm' more worried about any mark on my file. I guess I'll have to wait a few weeks.

No need to use Roman numerals. £20 seems generous!

LOL, it's a bit more than that. But I learned, many, many years ago that lenders/providers pore over these pages. Allow me my paranoia.
