    Re: Current Account Suspended.

If the bank have a suspicion that the customer may be engaged in "money laundering" (which has a very wide definition - basically if any monies in the account have been derived, directly or indirectly, from crime of any description then the customer will be engaged in money laundering) then the local branch will have filed a report internally with the bank's Money Laundering Reporting Officer and frozen the account.
The MLRO will then (if he agrees that there is a suspicion) file a report with SOCA. The account will remain frozen until the earliest of (i) SOCA reply with consent to unfreeze the account, (ii) seven working days expire commencing with the day after the day the report was filed with SOCA and SOCA have not responded to the report, or (iii) the bank satisfies itself that it no longer has grounds for its suspicion.
The bank will not tell its customer that it has filed a report of a suspicion of money laundering because that could amount to 'tipping off'.
So the customer will simply be fobbed off with the "we can't do it at present" line and no further explanation.
In practice SOCA normally respond to reports within 3 working days (often within a day or two) so keep checking with the bank whether the problem has been resolved.
The bank MIGHT confirm to the customer's solicitor that they are awaiting a response from SOCA.
It MIGHT help to give the bank a full explanation of the activity on the bank account and the legitimate reasons for drawing large amounts of cash. The bank might then decide they are no longer suspicious and unfreeze the account.
But the risk is that no-one at the bank will want to unfreeze the account until a response is received from SOCA.

I went to my local branch after their customer service team calling some internal department and seeing the bank manager after two visits over two days, they told me that my account had been suspended and that a letter has been sent out to me, they would not discuss why, they would not tell me the contents of the letter. I have all my direct debits taken from that account, my pay goes into it. I have been left with no access to my finances! Rather distressed I called the financial ombudsman who took a complaint from me. I have no idea what is happening! Or how I will service my financial commitments. Can anyone help me on what I should do to get this resolved. I have read this can be a reaction to fraud/money laundering however I don't see how this applies to me. Either way I wont be able to feed myself, my wife or daughter shortly if this isn't resolved.

I really hope someone can shed some light on this for me.
When did you see the Bank Manager?

Just a thought, but is your Austrailian bank account in the exact same name as the account that is frozen? My UK bank once queried (although they were polite enough to query it, not suspend my account!) a transfer between my UK account and my US account because my UK account has always been in my "maiden" name and my US account was in my "married" name, and I had omitted to mention to them that I had married - largely because it was none of their business unless they intended to send me a present; and I am permitted to use any damn name I want, as I explained to them. But if the names are "close" and not exactly the same, it may raise flags about multiple identities which are not for legal purposes?

Yes the Australian account has the same name, and the response about SOCA is useful to know. It's just scary for me that this can happen with no explanation from the bank or anyone to advise me. Any ideas on how long I should prepare for this to drag out to as I believe I have done no wrong doings. Worst case scenario? Apart from contacting a solicitor is there anything else I can do at this point?

It may be an idea to mention to the bank that you are aware of the procedures, and offer full explanation to any queries they may have.

If it is the case that they are "keeping you in the dark" for a reason, this may persuade them that there is no point.

You deposit your money to the Bank on a regular basis and are an RBS customer and have been for a few years. What they have provided to you in return is not customer service but customer stress. They have frozen your account and to date you have no explanation why?! I would throw ALL my toys out the cot first thing on Monday. This is complete and utter nonsense!!

There is no reason whatsoever that they could not tell you in branch what the letter was about, especially with proof of ID. The freezing of your account has a significant impact on your life and they should have been sensitive to that. If the letter was that important it should have been sent by special delivery and received by now.

I would be on the news for kicking up holy hell in my bank if they tried pulling this stunt on me. I don't understand it at all,,why didn't you DEMAND to see the Manager yesterday? Is there possibly something you are omitting to tell us on here (which is fine,,it's none of our business) because this really doesn't make sense or am I completely missing something?

                      Re: Current Account Suspended.

Money laundering is obviously very serious, however RBS should still have been far more sensitive to the fact the impact it has on the customer on the account being frozen and dealt with it in a much more efficient manner. 'A letter in the post' well how many letters have been lost/delayed by the Royal Mail? If I had a pound for each letter I would be living in Buckingham Palace!

Yes I saw the manage and was given the response I gave above, there is nothing I'm omitting in my description of my current situation, I'm a royal marine commando in the uk armed forces and conduct myself as such, yes the possibility of pushing this issue into the press is not something that escapes me. However at this point I have to concentrate on feeding myself, my family and meeting my financial responsibilities, which for me means I must have this problem fixed ASAP! I appreciate the commentary, but please keep the incriminations to yourselfs.

Do you have a ssaving account or a building society account? If you do arrange to get your wages paid into this account . If you dont open another account with a different institution.
From reading your post I am inferring that you have an account in Australia. Could you get some money transferred from ustralia to the UK? If you can have you considered the use of western union..

It is a priority to get it sorted out, CAB 1st thing Monday? or unit welfare officer? or SSAFA?

I don't agree with you in terms of suspending an account. If there is a genuine reason(and I am not saying that there is or is not) then not to do so would be contrary to regulations and could technically mean that a fraud continue to be committed(and I am not sayin that the op is committing fraud).
I have to say that I have heard of "letter is in the post" when someone has come into a branch to complain about a frozen account. These days people notice suspension of accounts much more faster than when a letter is sent out.

I hope that what I and others on the thread have said are of some use to you when you go and see the idiots on Monday.

I had a huge issue with RBS in 2008 (long story) and I changed banks in consequence. I am so glad I did!

The very best of luck and let us know how you get on.
