  • Trick or Treat by Nastywest?

I got myself in a mass of financial trouble about 8 yrs ago. One of them was with the Natwest. I owed them about 7k. With my depression i forgot or just ignored it and buried my head in the sand, the outcome was they stopped chasing me until about a year ago when they sold it to Capquest, who i ignored again as it was way past the statute barred time. Capquest have had no luck and i haven't heard from anyone for around 6 months now, until yesterday when i got a letter from the Natwest. The letter said, that after reviewing my closed account (its been closed 8 yrs) they have realised they mis applied some incorrect charges and would like to apologise and send me the money back including interest, and can they have my bank account details to send me the £80 they owe me!! Now being of a very suspicious nature i don't believe a word of it. I think they are either trying to get my bank details to take money from me OR are just trying to confirm i still live there. What does everyone else think? Is this something they are known to do? Either way they can keep their £80 i wont be contacting them!

Last contact was over 6 years ago so the debt is statute barred. They have sent letters to people where they have stated a misapplied charges and that it will be refunded. If NatWest sent the letter then it is them refunding that amount to the account so keep the letter because if you have made no contact then CapQuest might suggest that you have acknowledged the debt, which you certainly are not. It is over 6 years old and the debt is statute barred. You might simply want to put the letter in the bin and if they send another one, simply send it back with adressee unknown.

Thanks Leclerc, so you agree its best to ignore it and not go for the "refund"? As capquest might think i have acknowledged the debt or at least know i still live there?

I think that if NatWest want to refund it then they would later say that they had refunded it in error and that it should have been refunded back to the account where the outstanding amount was. Personally I would not respond whatsoever under the circumstances that you have outlined above.

Thank you. Although £80 would come in very useful at this time of year towards heating etc.. i was really suspicious of it and thought it was too good to be true

If they really wanted to refund you £80,they could have just sent a cheque, i think its a ploy to get you to respond:tinysmile_hmm_t2:

Well exactly Valeriej43 that's what i thought. And to be honest, like i said the money would come in useful at this time of year but i do owe them money so really if it was an honest letter i don't think i would be entitled to it.
