  • Nat West Refund

    Hi guys,
I'm hoping for a little advise please.
Ive just received a letter from Nat West Bank Stating that they have 'Recently identified that certain fees and interest have been incorrectly deducted from my account which was previously held by them.' They then go on to say that ' they incorrectly applied unarranged overdraft fees and debit interest to my account' And have said that i am entitled to £76.00 refund with £13.65 interest.
Ok, this is where it gets complicated. I was with Nat West bank from the age of 17 to about the age of 28. Throughout that time I got in a large amount of debt through overdraft. Mainly through their large unarranged overdraft fees as i wasn't managing my finances properly.
A few years ago I applied to have a large lump of my overdraft fees paid back, as well as other bank charges to me (like a lot of people did) but got in just too late, and I believe it was decided that banks didn't have to 'payout' anymore overdraft fees.
I am now paying Natwest their overdraft fees in full (As well as my overdraft) through a Debt Management Program via the CCCS. As i am in financial hardship.
Now, when i looked into getting my overdraft fees back for the last six years it worked out that Natwest had charged me over £2500 in overdraft fees. My balance of the account was just over £3000 o/d. (Which is the amount I am currently paying off via the CCCS)
Surely If they are admitting they have charged me wrong, it should be more than £76?
How would i find out, and what would i need to ask them to send me through so i can check?
Apparently I have 28days to receive my refund.
I hope i've not confused too many people with my babble. If something doesn't make sense please let me know
    Kind Regards
    FP

Would you be so kind as to scan the letter onto the forum making sure your details and their reference number is missing. is the signature a generic one(does is look photocopied ).

The Signature is photocopied yes. It looks like a generic letter to be fair.

There we go, this is the front, and the back of the letter. They have also supplied me with a 'Customer Refund Form' where i have to add my present bank account details.

Can you ask them the question: what is the date or dates when those two fees were taken from your account......If the letter is generic then I wonder how many other people have received such letters and why(more importantly)

I am no expert here, but would like to suggest you do the following, as i have found it may be beneficial....

                        1. Request a SARS request. There are some guides on the forum. I would personally fill out the request and take it into your branch of nat west, speak to the manager and get him to take your £10 and fax it to the SARS team. ALL the branches have the FAXINATION NUMBERS of all the relevant departments within the organisation. Get them to stamp it, date it, and send it special delivery POST AS WELL, FOR YOUR RECORDS.
                        2. Whilst in your branch raise an official complaint about your questions, get a copy and the operatives name and status ( important ) and collate your information. Also get them to stamp it and date it.
3.Once you have ALL the copies of the above, scan it, attach it and Write to stephen.hester@rbs.co.uk requesting why this has only now come to light.

PLEASE KEEP A RECORD OF ANY EMAILS, LETTERS OR TELEPHONE CONVERSATIONS YOU MAY HAVE...

I don't like the sound of this bit that you have to supply them with your new bank account details. Why can they not send you a cheque they have your address??

Good post on MSE posted up by Leclerc - so it might well be genuine if this refund is connected to this incident. But you still need to ascertain what this refund is for as it may have nothing to do with the refunds described in that article and it may well be scam.

Do we know if the address on the letter is genuine??
