Glad to be of help, I've had nothing but trouble since I made the same switch to Santander so I'll be happy to help anyone get out of trouble with them.

It's great to be back btw.

      THANK YOU
You guys are all so knowledgeable and helpful spending your free time helping people. Amethyst-how can I get a statement breaking down the charges without any details of the account? All I have is a letter from the collection agency with the account number....
Do you really think I can get the charges reversed?

It may certainly be worth a shout in using this as an arguement, although from mt experience, when switching banks for this £100 reward the bank dealt with everything. This included switching DD's, SO's and Salary receipts (they even contacted my employer to notify them of the new account details).

I suppose the fact have not done these things could also be used as an arguement, afterall, the onus was on the bank to set up everything.

Can you remember Shih Tsu if part of the Account switching process was for them to set up all existing DD's, SO's etc from the other account?

not masses in those T&Cs specific to the £1000 a month on the preferred account.

Specific Conditions L: Preferred Current Account
            L1 Introduction
These conditions apply to any person who opens a Preferred
Current Account with us who meets the eligibility criteria as
            set out in L2.
            L2 Eligibility

Re: £800 charge for not paying into new Santander account!

To qualify for the £100 & 5% AER: switch using our Account Transfer Service and pay in £1,000 a month
If you don't switch you can still apply online but you won't qualify for £100 and Daily Arranged Overdraft Fees will apply from account opening.

Preferred Current Account – if you
have not switched and after 12
              months if you have switched
              50p a day (capped at
              10 days each monthly
              statement period

I presume the OP didn't sign up to the switching service then lol.

Re: £800 charge for not paying into new Santander account!

okay, need to start a formal complaint off to start the 8 weeks ticking.... feel free to jump in edit/amend/completely rewrite the following; I thought starting at the beginning as an enraged customer might be a good place, and let them explain it first -rather than doing all the work for them.

Nattiepoo's - who is the best top nob to write to these days ?

                    Dear Sirs,

                    Formal Complaint
                    Preferred Current Account No. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I am shocked to have recently been contacted by a debt collection agency on Santander's behalf asking for a sum of £800, for an account I have never used.

Back in MONTH 2011 I applied, through your website, for a Preferred Current Account, thinking I would arrange to have my income paid into the account. However following my application my circumstances changed as I (went away/changed jobs etc) and the account was not therefore suitable for my needs.

I therefore cut up the debit card received and promptly forgot all about it.

I have no idea how the account can possibly be in debit of £800 and would like an explanation, and a list of all and any transactions carried out on the account since it's inception. I can only imagine it is some form of insane bank charges you have been applying to my account - for not using the account ? Either that or some form of ID theft has taken place.

I would also like a copy of the precontractual information, contract and terms and conditions in force at the time I applied for the account.

I would also like to request you close the account forthwith.

I look forwards to receiving your response by return.

                    Regards

                    xxxxxxxxxxxx

lol, yeah why not, a CEO lakky will reply on their behalf but it usually gets things moving. I wrote to Barclays CEO about a problem with an old Woolwich account and things got sorted pretty instantly.

Right tactic with the confused customer letter you think?

Like it Ame - no apostrophe in it's by the way (sorry!).

I particularly like the way you're asking them to close, which if they did, would leave no debt as there's no account. Never realised you were sneaky too!

                            Thanks guys!!!!!!!
SO glad there appears to be a logical, virtually hassle free get out for this. So I'll send a copy of that letter out...which address should it go to?
thank you thank you thank you
(now to remember which month it was.....!)

The complaints department could be an option.

                              Complaints
                              Santander UK PLC
                              PO Box 1125
                              BRADFORD
                              BD1 9PG

Or would anyone else suggest different?

I emailed my complaint (which was about a different subject) to the address above a lady called Michelle Caines dealt with my complaint. I was replied to within a few hours and all was sorted within a few days. I received many apologise and a bit of compo too.
