Today I arrived home to a bailiff letter from marstons reg a tv licence from 2005!! I was at a friends house at the time watching tv and I do recall answering the door to a tv licence man!!! And apparently because I have done this am required to pay the fine for the unlicensed property!! (Is this true?) marstons want £465 for a £160 fine that's not even mine!! Is there anything I can do on this matter?? Am a single parent I really can't afford to pay that amount! The letter I got was a final notice so I have 4 weeks to pay it! The bailiff(who was extremely abrupt, patronising and rude on the phone)said I would have to gave £150 a week to them to stop further action being taken,ie car being clamped, locksmiths to get in my house,if I haven't paid the debt off in the 4 weeks timescale I have!!! I really don't want it to come to that! But I don't have a spare £150 a week to pay a bailiff for a debt that isn't mine!! Am so worried about this and feel totally helpless! Any information would be extremely helpful thanks

Re: Marstons-TV licence!!
Don't know if it has been changed but back in the day, it was the person who answered the door got done irrespective of whether they were the householder, or a visitor. All TVL are interested in is that J Bloggs was watching a TV without a license, they don't give a flying Firk that they are a visitor. Quite a few young babysitters between 12 and 16 were done for TV License in the past, in just the same circumstance as OP, as they were the ones caught watching the TV, the fact they didn't know the premises was unlicensed was no excuse, as far as TVL are concerned it is Strict Liability same as a speed camera.
See the big elephant stampeding around the room with TVL now?

Re: Marstons-TV licence!!
As bizzybob points, out this is what is known as a 'babysitter case'.
At the time, did you sign anything at the door?
Were you ever aware of the court case (was a summons sent, perhaps to your friends house and they never told you?). After the hearing (assuming that there ever was one), was there any other correspondence?
If the 'offence' was at your friends house, how did they obtain your address?

At the time, did you sign anything at the door? (they usually try to get the victim to sign the infamous TVL178 confession form. They often lie, claiming that it's only a 'record of their visit').

Re: Marstons-TV licence!!
I have heard nothing of this until a bailiff arrived yesterday! I did sign a form! We're going back 9 years I was younger then and just signed the form! (Irresponsible I now know) I don't know how they have obtained my address? I have a tv licence on my own property could they have got it that way?? This has caused a fall out now between me and my friend and her parents (it was her parents house) as they are just not interested that I have to pay a £465 debt that belongs to them!! Surely there has to be some justice in this??

If we were all watching a TV in a pub and the pub had no TV licence would the customers be liable?

Re: Marstons-TV licence!!
If you knew nothing at all about this until the Bailiff turned up then you must contact the Court where it was originally heard and explain what has happened. They should then allow to swear a Statutory Declaration which will rewind everything if granted and get rid of your newest best friend. Time is of the essence as you are only allowed 21 days since finding out about it.
