  • Equita Problems

Hi i'm a new member and not even sure if i have posted correctly but i need to have a rant and also seek advise!!!...Eqita are lurking around again!...Admittedly the council tax account is from a previous address many years ago. i have just however moved from my Grandmother's house as her full time carer as i have just had a baby. I contacted the council to notify my move with a forwarding address and now i am being made to feel i am refusing to pay.

I had a balance of £470 which crept up to £725 due to bailiff costs i paid half to clear one account on the condition that i pay minimum of £40 per month following this to clear the other. Since i have had 2 bailiffs pick up my case asking for full amount!! I have not defaulted on any payments since arrangement was put in place (apparently arrangement has not been recorded on system even though was agreed)
I was on income support at the time so i could only agree to £40 a week now on tax credits as my partner has a job but still a low income! When i contacted the bailiff i made the arrangement with, he advised that i ignore this bailiff as he had no right to pick up my case as an arrangement is in place. I tried to call and make a payment but was refused as a new bailiff has my case. Who has now added another £250 to my bill. I have been paying online to show my commitment but due to the account reference number ending in '78' instead of '79' they are taking it as non payment. Both accounts are in my name one is cleared and the other has the other half of initial debt, can they not just transfer my money over? or send it back to me and i'll pay again as this would be classed as an over payment? I am becoming increasingly stressed with this and last bailiff has given me a seizure notice and has threatened to take my car which my family bought for me to say thank you for caring for my grandmother for 4 years.. I know such detail is irrelevant but i needed to add as this is what is fueling my frustration i would not have a car otherwise! I am doing my best to pay and have not defaulted this year. Do these bailiffs think they are my only bill??? I have until tomorrow to say when i can clear the balance!!
Apologies for any grammatical errors, i am a tired mother of two... On that note i will go to bed!! Please any advise would be greatly appreciated and i hope my post makes sense to enable suitable advise! p.s i love Equita!

    Guess what?

    You are being massively overcharged.

Look here - link - to see what may lawfully be charged.

Send the buggers letter 1 from here - link - for the free breakdown of the "fees" and "charges" they have imposed.

Unfortunately, as Equita is involved, your local council has probably "out-sourced" Council Tax collection (and probably other admin duties too) to the infamous Crapita, so getting a straight and truthful answer from the drones at the Town Hall will probably be impossible.

Excellent advice from Clever Clogs. You should also phone the council and ask:

      1. How many Liability Orders they have against you?
      2. The dates they were obtained?
      3. The addresses they were for?
      4. The period of time each covers?
      5. How much each one was for?
      6. How much is still outstanding?
      7. The dates they were passed on for enforcement?

Post back up as soon as you have the answers!

Rather than from Clever Clogs?

Never mind. I'll save the questions and use them next time.

Scroll down the Council Tax sticky and you'll find them:

            Re: Equita Problems

Excellebt advice from Clever Clogs & Labman, but further, as you have just had a baby, and your family is on a low wage there is a potential vulnerability under the national standards, I would appraise the Head of Revenues and CEO along with the elected leader and your MP as to Crapquita's excessive (for your level of income) demands, via a Forma Complaint. Do you know exactly how much the council are owed minus Equita's outrageous fees, for instance the usually add loadsa fees many unlawful at the letter stage, this is known as "Frontloading" and is illegal/

Do they claim to have a levy, as in have they ever been in your home and listed goods? if not most of their fees are invalid. Have they tried to levy your Grandmothers goods for your debt in the past? if so they are cruising between just two things, Jack and carp, and Jack has left town. Equita are under investigation by Northampton Trading standards, and the OFT, so if any of their dealings with you are dodgy regarding fees, it may be worth referring what has hapenned to you to them.
