Debt collection fine for driving on bus lane

Hi,
I have received letter from debt collector for £400 fine. It states that i was driving on a bus lane last year in April and did not pay the fine. I did not receive any letter for the fine last year or somehow missed it if it was sent. They mentioned that they would take my car if i dont pay the fine. Please advise how to deal with this. Is there a way i can still pay the original fine of £60 as i did not receive any letter.

Have you been in touch with the council ? I think that'd be my first step to check it is a bonafide claim and find out when and where they sent the original letters to, and tell them you haven't received them. Our council have a log on facility which shows the images taken by the camera of you contravening the bus lane regs, so you should ask them for details of the original contravention as well. Have a chat with them and see what they say.

Thanks for your reply Amethyst. I did check on the website and confirmed that the contravention happened but i did not receive any letters. I moved in August last year, however i did visit my previous address today to check for any letters but in vain. I will call the council on Monday.

You should have had the letters at least in April last year if the contravention was in March 2016. It would have been more than one as well, first one with a discount, then full fine then threats of debt collection / court etc probably before August so def need to quiz the council how this has got so far without you knowing, when it went to debt collection and why they managed to find you well enough - guessing they did a new search on the dvla and found the car reg'd at your new address.

I contacted the council and they have agreed that i can pay the original fine of £60.

Did you update the V5 with DVLA when you moved?

I did update V5 but unfortunately did not receive any letter. I did call the council today and they have allowed me to pay the original fine.
