  • edf charged me for a neighbours energy. What are my rights?

I signed over to EDF in September by phone. I didn't hear anything from them for several weeks and thought it was just taking a long time. Then they took £47 by DDR from my bank - I called to inform them I hadn't heard from them and that I was still paying Scottish Power. I also called Scottish Power who said they hadn't had any notification of a switch. I called EDF back and they asked me to confirm my address - I did and they told me it was wrong! After some discussion they did disclose the address I was being billed for - it wasn't mine! They promised to refund my £47 and start the switch to my address immediately. A few weeks later they took another £47 from my account. Again I called, again they said they'd sort it immediately - they didn't. After 5 phone calls and 6 emails I eventually spoke to my bank who refunded my £94 and put an indemnity claim on EDF. I informed EDF by phone. Then I got a letter from EDF (the FIRST letter I have ever received from them) saying that my account had been debited £94!! Called again, they said it had been sent automatically for the previous account at a different address - the woman on the phone would not accept that if that was the case then the letter would have gone to the different address, not mine. I asked for written confirmation that I was no longer paying for energy at a different address and a simple apology - she was reluctant to let this happen and said she would ensure it was all sorted out immediatly and offered me £20 compensation. I'm sure I have some sort of legal issue with them - any suggestions/ideas? I've filled in a form for the ombudsman.

I always thought that apart from the adress utility companies have an account number or ID number for each adress looks like a monster cockup?
I think many on LB are hoping someone else is paying their bills?

Assuming that you have got a full refund and that your credit history remains untainted, you have little chance of any claim succeeding, even though you are technically right.

I have been promised a full refund twice and twice it didn't appear. Then when the bank refunded me through the indemnity claim EDF charged me the £94 again - this time to my address which is the confusing part as the £94 had been charged to a different address originally. The new account number I now have for my address is the one that has been debited the £94. And the fact that I've been out of pocket for £94 for 3 months..... As I said to EDF I only want an apology, when she offered me £20 I declined the offer as it's like a slap in the face after 3 months of being messed about. All I want is confirmation that I am not paying for someone else's energy and the paperwork to show that it has been resolved.

The bank refunded the first £94 and will get that back for themselves from EDF.

You say the second £94 was 'debited'. Does that mean it was actually taken from your bank account, or that they have simply sent you a bill?

They sent me a letter saying that '£94 has been debited from your account'. It had my new (real address) account number on it. They've tried to take a few direct debits from me in the last 2 weeks but the bank has refused them - under my instruction until the mess is sorted out. Was this the wrong thing to do?

Yes, well, how do you think they make huge profit whilst claiming that they are "subsidising supply of domestic customers". Go figure.

Re: edf charged me for a neighbours energy. What are my rights?

Well - I've had two conversations with EDF and on both occasions I've been fobbed off! The ONLY letter I've recieved is a bill to pay for another address's energy. I have been sent a letter that states 'please find enclosed our complaints procedure...' but there was nothing in the envelope! Today I spent 35 minutes on the phone to them and was told that my 'account manager' would call me back. I asked for their name and was told that they couldn't give me a name. When I asked for the customer services person's name I was speaking to I was told it 'was not relevant' as they were not dealing with my complaint. So, I'm still paying for an empty house's energy, I'm now in debt of at least £94 for their house's bills and after several phone calls and several emails I still have no answers. The only correspondance I have from EDF is a bill for the £94 that isn't mine plus a letter enclosing their complaints procedure - with no complaints procedure enclosed! OMG - what the hell do I do?????? I'm really concerned that I haven't paid an energy bill for 2 months. Should I pay???

I have now gone down the ombudsman route following a compensation offer from EDF. And a bill for nearly £700!! Apparently they agreed meter readings with Scottish power at the switch. It just gets worse. I`m losing sleep over it now, I want an end to it. £700 for 9 weeks energy? For a small house with 2 people??

Keep on at them - they will swort it out eventually.
