  • Hi new here and need help

Hi there i'm currently in a panic about debt, my partner has recently gone bankrupt however council tax debt becomes mine, i am unemployed and only receive child benefit and child tax which in total amounts to £357 a month. My partner earns £1320 a month, we have outgoings of rent £500, council tax £160, sky £70, gas & electricity £160 car insurance £85 and bankruptcy payments of £40 all monthly. So in total our outgoings are £1015 a month. I recieved a letter from George Walker saying i owed them £859.74, so i emailed and said i was willing to pay £20 a week, however they have replied saying thats not acceptable and they want £35 a week, i just can't afford that i don't know what to do. Can anyone help? x

    Hiya,

If your partners income is approx £1700 a month before tax and NI (£1333ish after tax&NI) and you have two children, you may be eligible for some council tax benefit (approx £5 a week) and local housing allowance / housing benefit (not sure if you rent privately or council/housing association) of approx £20 a week - it may be worth asking your council for the forms, or having a check on one of the benefits checker sites, such as turn2us or the much more in depth DWP one https://www.dwpe-services.direct.gov...8.__ora_navig=

How much of the £160 you pay in council tax each month is repaying arrears ?

Sky bill seems quite high - is that telephone / internet and Tv ? Do you have to pay BT for line rental as well ? and does that include calls ?

This George Walker debt, I assume that is only in your name as it wasn't included in the bankruptcy ?

Have you done a full income and expenditure sheet ? and when you offered £20 a week to GW did you send them a copy of it ?

we only have one child at the moment. The £160 for council tax is doesn't include any arrears we have.

The sky was £70 last month but have changed the package and was £58 this month including calls and line rental.

The council tax debt cant be included in the bankruptcy as i stayed there as well so it automatically becomes mine.

I filled in their online expenditure but that didn't really have bits for me to include if i remember right and i forgot other things we pay out.

We pay out now that i've worked everything out £500 for rent, £160 for council tax (not including arrears) £85 for car insurance £16 for personal insurance, £11.87 tv licence, gas and electricity £160, Sky £58, tools for work £60,

then if i have to pay GW £35 a week thats another £160 before food, clothing, petrol,

It would be worth your while filling out an IE sheet (link at top of this page) so you can see in black and white exactly where you stand.
