I banked with Midland Bank for many years before it was taken by HSBC. Due to adverse circumstances when I went abroad to look after my 92 year old Mother who had a stroke in 2021. I couldn’t partially pay my overdraft of £3057.27 and couldn’t communicate with them by email nor by phone as communication is very difficult in the country I was.

On my return in November 2022 to UK I went and try to speak to one of their managers to explain the situation but they told me to refer to Moorcroft which I did.

In January 2023 I ended in Hospital where lots of health conditions where found. in November 2023 I had a fall and fractured my right arm and had two surgeries.

My only income is my State pension of £769 at the time it was £720 I am 72 and have nowhere to live and friends and family have been helping with essentials like food and stays.

Could someone please advise me what is the minimum amount HSBC are likely to accept as a settlement.

    Hi SOTERO

    Welcome to LB

They bought the account for pennies.

Because of your circumstances, see if they are willing to write the debt off.

Explain your personal circumstances, health etc. Include doctors letter etc.

Make sure you get Proof of Postage.

Update the thread once they respond.

What is the present position? Have you received letters making demands? Has it gone further than that?

Many thanks for your prompt reply. They have sent me a few letters as I was trying to negotiate a lower amount to settle the amount outstanding. The stress is just too much to handle.
So I’d like to know what’s the minimum amount I could offer to settle the £3057.27 outstanding. My income is £769 only and I don’t have a lot to spare.

Base your offer on what you can spare, explaining your financial position and needs.Maybe a small amount each month for a set period of time.

If the matter went to Court, you filled an income and expenditure form and were left with £1 each month, then that is all the Court would ask you to pay. So, maybe go back to them, offer less, explain that the Cost of Living crisis has kicked in and now you can only offer £350 to settle the debt. Energy is going up this winter.
