  • Case and Costs Management Conference

Hi, I am the defendant and a LIP in a multitrack case for which a case and costs management conference has been arranged in a couple of weeks time via video link. There are a whole page of directions to comply with prior to the conference. The other side have a solicitor and I do not and I do not have a single clue of how to comply with the directions given as I don't understand the majority of them. I have used a solicitor and a specialist adviser at various points up until now so have incurred legal costs to date and may do in the future but have no idea how to quantify that. The other sides solicitor emailed me to say that LIPs cannot claim costs at all, which I believe is not true. Can anyone point me in the direction of some help or advise in this area?

FYI, I have an application for support being processed with Advocate, this case does not qualify for any Legal Aid or such, and I have used the free service with certain universities for help previously but they would not be able to provide advice in time for this conference. It's a franchise issue so also not something Citizens Advice were able to help with. Google search hasn't yielded anything productive. I'm pretty much on my own and have exhausted every option I can think of so hope someone out there has some bright ideas of how to proceed.

    Many thanks..

You might download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person - link in my signature.

Why not begin quantifying your costs to date by including in full the bills you have paid?
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

Thank you very much. This handbook is so helpful. I wish I'd had this before the Allocation Hearing. For me, as I'm sure it is for other LIPs, the fear of the unknown is sometimes paralysing and I might not have had a panic attack on the stairs of the court had I known what exactly was going to happen in the hearing! At this next hearing I might actually be able to string a sentence together this time now I know what is expected of me. Fingers crossed anyway.
