Tell him not to waste money on a solicitor. Just ignore the letters unless a court claim turns up.

Point him to this site and search on RLP.

It is not necessary to pay a solicitor
        Just ignore the letters.

RLP and their ilk only need to be ignored and eventually they give up.

I (19F) also shoplifted at primark today. I know it was incredibly stupid, I have OCD so I try my hardest but I can’t help it. They took my information and told me that I will get a letter from RPL to pay a fine. But I am broke, like I don’t have enough money to eat, broke. I did some research and heard that I should just ignore the letter because RPL doesn’t have a legal basis. What should I do? I don’t want to get in more trouble, i’m just scared and want this whole situation to be over. Please help

You know what to do; ignore them.
Not only do not have any legal standing, IMO they are are only a bunch of vigilantes dressing themselves up as judge, jury and executioner.
As such they are they are beyond the pale and should not be interacted with in any way at all.

Get on with your life and try and put this behind you.

If you are in dire need you could perhaps contact the Trossell Trust for food bank locations or the citizens advice for assistance.
Are you in contact with your GP about your OCD? There may be other underlying concerns about which he/she can help

Thank you so much for your help. Yes, i am applying for therapy. Have a trial session tomorrow. Food banks are amazing, but there are always many people queuing up and sometimes, it runs out before I can get any.

                  Hi,

It’s been a few months since my last RLP letter and I thought the matter was over and done with. However now I have gotten a letter from BPO Collections. I don’t know what to do, i’m still not in the position to pay it off. I’m anxious and just want this matter over with. What should I do?

Responded on other thread, it's best to stick to one thread.

BPO Collections are just a debt collector appointed by RLP. BPO have no more powers than RLP have, which is none at all. I noticed last year that when people ignore RLP letters then RLP get BPO to write a few more. Presumably in the hope that getting a letter from a debt collector will frighten some people into paying money they don't owe.

Ignore them the same way you ignored RLP. There is nothing BPO can do except send a couple more letters.

Hi, I have a similar issue from Primark dating from last summer and received 3 letters from RLP which i ignored from advice on here.

However today I received contact from BPO but it wasn’t a letter it was a phone call.
I confirmed my name and address before realising what it was regarding and then hung up the phone when they said it was to do with RLP - what should I do?
I haven’t seen anyone on here say that had a phone calls only letters!
Am I in a different position because they have called me and now I have confirmed my details on top?

                          Please help, I’m freaking out!

Thank you so much for any help in advance!

It's not uncommon for debt collectors to search for people's phone numbers and phone them to give them hassle. Calling gives them no more rights than when they write - ie none at all. They knew your name and address of course because you provided it to Primark originally, they gave it to RLP and RLP gave it to BPO. What they didn't know was your phone number. So as debt collectors do they search publically available information for a number they think might be you then call it to get you to confirm it is you.

But no real harm done and no need to freak out. You don't have to talk to them if they call again.

Firstly, block their number if you can. Unfortunately that may not 100% stop them calling you as debt collectors sneakily often use different numbers each time they call.

If they do call again tell them that you will not discuss anything with them, that they must never call you again, and that you are requesting them to remove your phone number from their database as is your right under data protection law. Then hang up. Keep a record of the date/time of the call and what you told them in case they ignore your instruction and keep calling so that you have the evidence for a complaint to the Information Commissioner.
