  • Are cheques legal tender

At some point our council tax payments are going to refuse cheques and want direct debits set up. Assuming cheques are still legal can a council refuse them?

Cheques are not legal tender, and never have been!
    Creditors can refuse them

In England and Wales only Royal Mint coins and Bank of England notes are legal tender
Ip & 2p coins are only legal tender for amounts up to 20p

Thanks for reply des8, I googled `postal orders` and apparently they are legal tender from 1914 if that is correct then can the council refuse them for payment (Scotland)

Not heard that about Postal Orders previously Are you sure that the google reference was to "legal tender" and not "legal currency"?

For example Scottish banknotes, whilst legal currency are not legal tender.
In Scotland only royal mint coins are legal tender, Bank of England notes are not, so I very much doubt if postal orders are!
