This my son received a phone call, he thought from the court, stating he was due in court today and that he was looking at a custodial sentence for non payment of court fines. Today he attended court after a nightmarish week, to find that he was not on any court list and that his case had been passed to collectica. He later received a phone call from a ballif, asking him if he could pay the fine. Are they allowed to harass people in this way? They also told him that there was a warrant on him.

Do you / does he know what the court fine is for?

When was the fine issued and what has he done regarding arranging payment of it ?

He should make a formal complaint about the call - does he have anyway of checking what the number was that called him ?
Did the call he received tell him date, time, location to attend court ? A summons would normally be formally in writing. Any change of address that any letter might have gone astray?
