My address was sold to a PPI company for a lot of money by the Royal Mail. Is this legal? The content of their letter mentioned an old bankruptcy, this caused an immediate shock and embarrassment. Please, can you advise me if this is a data protection breach as well as advice regarding Royal Mail selling my address? Thank you.

Hi, Wales01man thank you for responding.
The Royal Mail were paid by a PPI company for my address. I'm concerned that the RM can sell our addresses? I have spoken to the PPI company since writing on this thread and they told me they pay a lot of money to RM who bought my address from Credit Reference Agencies. I'm shocked, isn't this a Data Protection breach?

Do you still have this letter that mentions your previous bankruptcy ? Worth reporting it to the ICO so they can look into where the data was obtained and whether that was a leigitmate use of it. It's unlikely to have much affect but a complaint doesn't hurt.

Otherwise Bankruptcy is a public record - see https://www.insolvencydirect.bis.gov...e=&OPTION=NAME and it could be scraped easily to find soft targets for their marketing junk.

Companies involved in administering IVAs, bankruptcies etc also sell their customer data.

And Royal mail buy data from other sources and sell it on - https://www.royalmail.com/corporate/...-for-marketing

Permissions wise it'll have been some tick box somewhere or some terms confirming your data can be shared with a third party etc.

What were they actually writing to you about ? Was it just marketing ?

Thank you Amethyst, The PPI sent me a letter addressed private and confidential. The letter began Your bankruptcy and then stated as your bankruptcy has ended you can now file for PPI.

                Yip you're doing it fine

There has been a recent case involving bankruptcy and PPI refunds - so likely thats why people who have been bankrupt are being targetted now.
