Shoplifting at Tesco

Hi I've just joined as I need some advise.stupid thing to do but I didn' scan 2 items that came to around £3.they decided to do a check on what I had got.they found the 2 items which I hadn' scannd.i went to leave the store after they has got them back and was physically stopped by security and took to the office where they took my details.said I was banned from any tesco. Said they where going to pass it onto the police then let me go.what happens now.i don' even know why I didn' scan the items I know it was stupid..sorry if this is in the wrong place

Possibly absolutely nothing with the Police but you may get a letter for civil recovery ''costs'' from a company called DWF or RLP. Post back on here if you do.

Was this a self checkout ( the one where you carry the blipper around the store with you then checkout without unpacking and they just do random spot checks? ) Seems odd if they found you hadn't scanned an item at that stage to then accost you on leaving the store. What did the checker say at the time they found the unscanned items?

First up, stop worrying.

They won't be going to the police, who quite frankly have better things to do than go after an inept shoplifter who didn't get away with 3 pounds worth of goods.

What you will probably get is a letter from a firm of solicitors (DWF) requesting you pay them shedloads of money for imagined costs.
All you need to do is to ignore it.
It will be followed up with more letters, all written in pseudo legal language designed to pressurise you into parting with your money.
Ignore them.
They are entitled to nothing, they know it and will not take the matter further.

Thank you for your replies.yes it was the scanner thing you carry round with you.the staff just took the things to one side.i was embarrassed so I just left the rest of the things in the trolley so I had nothing with me.yhe security said they had been watching me walk round the store

So you forgot to scan an item. or the scan didn't work and you assumed that it had.! Many times I've nearly done that. Perhaps I've forgotten at some time even! This is the nature of the system, it is open to abuse and also open to error, machine or forgetfulness, that is in their decision to use the process, there will be some unintentional losses.

Anyway, just don't respond to letters asking for costs, the costs would have been paid, ie wages of security, whether you made a mistake or not. Did the allow you to pay or remove the unpaid for items and let you leave with the paid for items?

They didn' let me pay for anything.they just took everything away even the items that did scan.the letters will get filed away with no response from me.even when the ban is over I won' be spending another penny in that store there' plenty of others in the town just abit further away.i wear hearing aids and sometimes if the isles are busy I don' hear the beep from the scanner so I don' always check

So they jumped the gun a bit.
They stopped you before you got to paying, and ignored the problem you have with hearing.

Probably not worth the effort of a complaint, just find a better store as you intend

I read this as you had actually paid for the items in your trolley, albeit there were 2 inadvertabtly not scanned and you left the goods that had been paid for?

I got to the till with the scanner.didnt get to scan the barcode at the till as staff had said they had been having problems with the system so I emptied everything so they could check it so I never paid for anything.they seemed unwilling to listen to anything I said

I don' think it' worth all the hassle of complaining I don't need extra stress with dealing with job worths.its one of the triggers to one of my illnesses
