  • A sense of Community

Ideally I would like to hear from the members but anyone can reply!!!

OK all, I’m probably not known for being that serious so decided to try to surprise you with a bit of an abstract topic.

Most (if not all) of us are refugees for somewhere else and have made a decision to accept the “most excellent” hospitality and amenities available to us here. We have been through the angst of breaking away from one community (I would assume for a variety of reasons, either as a result of situations we experienced personally or situations the happened to those we regards as friends) and now we find ourselves at the ground floor of a potentially enormous virtual building that we will be involved in filling with individuals and welding same into a community.

For a while before my decision to leave elsewhere I could feel the winds of totalitarian change blowing through the forums, posts were edited removed or locked by fiat with no apparent right of appeal or even reason. Discussions questioning the direction of the site were either ignored or else the participants in such discussions started to experience “difficulties” in using the site.

For me the final straw was the removal of the only area where communication was virtually instantaneous where many got the immediate help they needed (I know I did and my thread updating suffered due to the help I got from total strangers there), Understandably people took the opportunity to air concerns there as well, maybe not appropriate but what other avenue did we have.

Information and the sharing of ideas I feel is the lifeblood of any successful community, which not surprisingly seems to be the opposite of the experience I had before. We have been given a voice and leave to use it, with such largesse comes the responsibility to use it wisely. Rules are needed to guide and encourage the development of a community rather than subjegate its population and we owe our gratitude and respect to the individuals that have made this possible.

Everything is in place for us to do what is right and not replicate anything we might feel were errors from other societies. So your thoughts on how it could be done are appreciated.

    Cheers

    (Serious) BB

That is an eloquent, intelligent and honest account of what we have all endured to find ourselves in this new 'home'.

Thank you BB for expressing it so brilliantly. I hope everyone can sense and feel the optimism, openness and honesty of our intentions for the site.

Yes, we wanted to provide a relaxed new 'pad' for us all to hang out in peace, but more importantly we were all dedicated to the philosophy of helping others and sharing our wisdom and experience. These very valuables things became tarnished and unappreciated previously, so we are determined that this forum will be THE VERY BEST place to come for fantastic advice and support.

The biggest thing you can all do is take part and contribute but just as importantly we need members, if everyone can get very proactive and recommend us widely, then there is just a chance we will all be here in a year celebrating the growth of our remarkable site.
"Although scalar fields are Lorentz scalars, they may transform nontrivially under other symmetries, such as flavour or isospin. For example, the pion is invariant under the restricted Lorentz group, but is an isospin triplet (meaning it transforms like a three component vector under the SU(2) isospin symmetry). Furthermore, it picks up a negative phase under parity inversion, so it transforms nontrivially under the full Lorentz group; such particles are called pseudoscalar rather than scalar. Most mesons are pseudoscalar particles." (finally explained to a captivated Celestine by Professor Brian Cox on Wednesday 27th June 2012 )

Hear, hear to both. I think as long as we all fully embrace the new spirit, then this building will fill.

May I repeat a quote from "Field of Dreams" I recently heard here:

"Build it - and they will come."

It's always a realist that wakes us from our dreams, isn't it ?

The Dome was in the wrong place I reckon. We're in the right place at the right time, and we don't charge admission (contrary to previously-mongered rumour !!)

They'll come - if I have to frogmarch the buggers here myself !!!!

Very Very well said BB !!
Let's make it such a place where everyone can voice their opinions/suggestions ,where people will listen ,not jump on others for voicing what they think and build a community where we can all feel comfortable with friends we have now ,new ones that have yet to join and show each other respect.

                Well said BB - However.......

An "enormous virtual building" was what we had before and in the penthouse suite the Developers and Managers sat looking down through the one way glass floor picking and choosing their tenants according to their subservience.

What we are building here is a neighbourhood of the past where front doors are always open, neighbours put things to rights with a cup of tea over the garden wall and we get out the best china and custard creams when somebody new moves in.

                Ah the good old days.............

Very well put BB as ever a voice of reason and intelligence, we have to remember our reson for being here and that is to help others. I remember how worried and scared i was when taking on the banks and as long as we show others we are here to help I believe the site will do just fine. I also believe that the people who show commitment to the site should be acknowleged by those higher up the ladder and I mean people like you BB, you have shown in the past on other sites to be fair and impartial, you dont judge others and always treat people with respect and I think the site will greatly benefit from appreciating what members do. One thing we should learn from the past is that without members sites like this would be extremely difficult to operate. we have the opportunity as you say to build an exciting new site lets not ever lose sight of our reasons for being here.

I am lost for words. A well written statement that mirrors my thinking entirely. Thanks for that BB.
