                Re: Spam Problem

Well again this morning we have loads of spam posts filling up the recent post section on the homepage making it diffcult to see whos posted recently and in most need of help.

I know Cel spent a lot of time last week blocking IP addresses, but that doesn't work as most spammers use proxies so the IP addresses change everytime they turn their computers on. Only way to stop them really is to use captcha for account creation and to not allow people to post posts containing links till they have reached 5 posts already, as soon has the spammers know they are not able to post on the forum without having to waste their time first, which costs them money, they bugger off out of here to the next forum on their lists.

Using a captcha at account registeration helps weed out spam bots that spammers use to automatically create accounts, as spam bots can not read the captchas, therefore can not enter the correct capthca. Where as humans can. So it prevents them signing up to the forum in the first place, unless they decide to do so manually, which is where the back up defence of blocking posts containing links, where their post count is less than 5 kicks in. They will soon get the message and go ruin another forum with their spam and leave this one alone.

To be honest, i love coming on here in a morning see what new posts their are, and recently i haven't really be to keen knowing its going to be spam after spam. I know the site team are doing there best and i appreciate that, but i don't see why the above measure i have mentioned before can not be implemented as its rather easy to do so. Its just a click on a button with Yabb Based forums and i don't think Vbulletin will be much different.

                  Re: Spam Problem

Have to say Teaboy, and it's in no way a dig at the site team, it is a serious issue. I'm on here every morning between 6 and 7 ish, and several mornings now I've just said hello and gone due to the spam.

There's a site where prolific spammers can be looked up and blocked, and TBH, it's a shame a few trusted posters couldn't be given permissions to delete and ban spammers. I'm not suggesting an extension of site admin as they do a brilliant job with the existing team. A second tier. Of people who are on here much of the day would possibly be worth considering though if it's possible. I don't understand vBulletin 4, but I do know this is only site I frequent where spam is an issue, so one has to ask what the others are doing.

One in particular, not consumer related, has thousands of members, but I've never ever seen any spam on the site, and the site team is the owner, that's it. Actually I could pm him and ask what he does re this, as I know him quite well.

Can't say enough, not a dig, just trying to help solve a real problem.

Its worth asking and passing on the info to Cel and the team.

Before the spam on here was just a minor issue but its become a huge problem now, its like they time it to when they know the site team are tucked up in bed.

On top of that, it isn't good PR either when the spams being posted out on twitter too.

                        Re: Spam Problem

                        Hi all

Well, after the 15 hours offline last week because Global Gold Hosting (spit!!!) didn't bother to warn us that we were about to exceed our 30gig size limit.

So we have now moved to a new Host who provides a much more tailored solution and actually give a damn when your site crashes.

They are, hopefully today or tomorrow, going to install some spam filters which should help a lot.

I also like the idea of the Captcha at registration, I think that would hoover up the remaining spammers the filter misses?

I have just emailed the host to chase this up. In the meantime I can only apologise for the inconvenience. We are getting 8-10 an HOUR registering at the moment.

If we still have a problem then we will look at further measures perhaps involving trusted VIP's blasting the buggers! :beagle:
"Although scalar fields are Lorentz scalars, they may transform nontrivially under other symmetries, such as flavour or isospin. For example, the pion is invariant under the restricted Lorentz group, but is an isospin triplet (meaning it transforms like a three component vector under the SU(2) isospin symmetry). Furthermore, it picks up a negative phase under parity inversion, so it transforms nontrivially under the full Lorentz group; such particles are called pseudoscalar rather than scalar. Most mesons are pseudoscalar particles." (finally explained to a captivated Celestine by Professor Brian Cox on Wednesday 27th June 2012 )

I have my spamray gun at the ready lol

Glad to hear the new hosting provider is more willing to help. Screw the last one, if they could care about this site, then ******** to them. Check your contract see if they breached it, if they did, lets hit them where it hurts lol.

The capthca works a treat. I get hundreds of failed registeration requests on my site forum per day from spam bots, its blocks al of them. Its only the odd one here or there that actually bothers to manually register that gets through. The rest just bugger off on the the next forum. In last 2 months i have only had spammers get past the capthc but were foiled by the fact they can not post links in first 5 posts lol.

Thanks Cel - daft really, should have known you'd be on top of it already!

There'll always be the odd few, but existing team can mop those up without a problem I'd imagine.

                            Thanks! :beagle::tinysmile_kiss_t4::beagle:
