  • A comment on recent ‘Discussions’

We are all have knowledge that we are good enough to share on this forum and we all have opinions based on that knowledge and our life experiences that help others. It is no exaggeration to say that many members and visitors have had their lives turned around by the advice given on this site. I will even go so far as to say some advice and comments have saved lives.
I am the first to admit that my knowledge is limited but I think most of you know that I hold very strong views on certain subjects and have often, shall we say ‘aired’ those views with some vigour. HOWEVER….there have been many occasions when my views and opinions have been swayed by the comments of others. Reading comments based on experience and superior knowledge has often helped me see things from a different perspective. I have no doubt that taking a moment to consider views that differ from mine has given me a more balanced and better informed opinion.
I am not perfect and I cannot harp on about ‘the way I was brought up’ indicating some idealistic nurturing of principles but I do hold on to two important lessons learned over the years. One –we must learn to argue without rancour and two….I have two ears and one mouth and should use them in that proportion.
We may violently disagree with another’s opinion and with so many people from many different backgrounds on here there is a pretty good chance that will often be the case. We all want to put our point across but I would urge people to try and be a little more diplomatic. Surely it is better to simply state our opinion in a concise and calm manner than to ‘put someone straight’. When it is a point of law, I know we are all intelligent enough to tactfully point out the flaws in a suggested strategy without ‘slapping it down’.
One does not have to trawl for long to find a poster in dire circumstances. They need a place where constructive help is offered but also sanctuary from the strongly worded ‘red top’ letter, the threats of landlords, the fear of poverty and the bulling of bailiffs.
Debate is healthy. It has certainly helped me over the years and most of us have no problem when another member disagrees with us but I would beg you not to let the debate disintegrate into a heated argument that spirals off the topic. We are better than that and it would be a crying shame if we lost any of the brilliant members on here or frightened an OP away.
    Feel free to disagree!
