  • Free food for all

Food banks fed more than 346000 people last year. Common (and distressing knowledge) What is less well known is that volunteers at Sikh temples serve hot meals to many thousands of hungry UK residents. Sikh temples have a Langars or canteens. At these canteens it is estimated that as many as 5000 non Sikhs are fed each week. That’s 60000 per year.
A Sikh lady I spoke to told me she came to England when she was a child and her family were expelled from Uganda by Idi Amin in 1972. They arrived with one suitcase containing their total belongings. Her family now manufacture a food product which can be found in most homes.
When they came here they suffered racial discrimination and daily abuse. Her father, a deeply religious man and devout Sikh had to shave off his beard, remove his turban and cut his hair before he could secure employment. She cannot remember a single day when she was not bullied and taunted by fellow pupils at school.
This family now own a home in Mayfair as well as an impressive country residence, employ many people and yet members of the family often spend long days feeding the hungry regardless of their colour or creed.
One rather ignorant woman described this as being a ‘very Christian’ thing to do.
Ya think?!!! When is the Last time you were offered a free meal at your Church or Chapel?

    Re: Free food for all

When my marriage first broke down and I was forced to move a hundred miles away from anyone with just my three young children, my local CofE church and the Salvation Army helped me. We went to the Church a couple of times for sit down dinners ( me, three kids and a lot of rather elderly people lol) and we had a couple food parcels from the Salvation Army. A lady from the Church also came and checked we were okay a few times if we hadn't been out for a while. Thankfully due to the kindness of friends we didn't stay in that position for very long but I just wanted to say that ''Christian'' churches are quite often overlooked in the 'kindness' stakes.

I do think it is the individual and the community rather than the religion that helps others and inspires others to help. Many people make sacrifices to their beliefs ( not just religious beliefs) to improve life for their families and many make sacrifices in their own lives to help others, it is just less visible.

Well I am a huge supporter of the Sally Army who do fantastic work but the kindness of your Church really surprised and delighted me. Glad to see that there are church people who walk the walk! I am often reminded of Terry Wogan’s comment ‘a lot of religion but bugger all Christianity’.

I'm not sure about the churches here ... but there was a lovely church up in Bedlington Northumbeabd that handed out food parcels quite regularly (we used to donate food to it ourselves every week). It also had 'coffee mornings' where people could come in for a free snack and a hot drink in the colder months.

There's a church group a few miles down the road who help out the locals who need it (although I've not had a chance to find out more about it yet).

Personally, we have offered food, baby clothes/toys/bath/bouncers, bedding etc... through local groups (although I would never offer cash) and we quite often buy a homeless local something to eat when we see him.

I do applaud the sikhs who are feeding those in need ... and have pointed a few people their way in the past too But, I believe that it is more to do with how a person FEELS than their religion. If someone wants to be nice and do something for the benefit of others, then they should just go ahead and do it!

          Re: Free food for all

I just seem to have come across a lot of people associated with protestant and catholic churches who are more interested in fighting over flower arrangements and being the chairperson of jumble sale committees than actually being a Good Samaritan. I went to an ‘after church’ coffee morning with my mother in law where people ‘organise’ church events. All they did was bitch about each other and criticize. In the Catholic church I find barrel chested gorgons battling to be the priest’s favourite while humming the theme tune to the ‘Thorne Birds’.
It is such a relief to know that my experiences are not the norm but I did get angry when that woman used the word ‘Christian’ to describe all that is good and kind. As if other religions should be following the Christian way. I know the basic principles of Christianity, and indeed the very essence of the word itself, is to be more Christ like. I have just been unfortunate in not seeing much Christian behaviour in church communities. Many of the Catholics I have known never missed mass but would have happily burned me, a sinner, at the stake!
