  • Spoof Paypal email?

I've just received the following email; apparently, Paypal always use the customer's name.
An alert has been sent to PP.

    Dear PayPal Customer,

We need your help resolving an issue with your account. To give us time to work together on this, we've temporarily limited what you can do with your account until the issue is resolved.
We understand it may be frustrating not to have full access to your PayPal account. We want to work with you to get your account back to normal as quickly as possible.

Your account access has been limited for the following reason(s):

    * Unusual account activity has made it necessary to limit account access until additional verification information can be collected.(Your Case ID for this reason is PP-029-183-716-345)
    * Our system detected unauthorized use of a credit card linked to your PayPal account.(Your Case ID for this reason is PP-028-183-716-222)

How can I get my account access restored?
    * Sign in to your account and follow the instructions on your screen.

It will only take a minute of your time.
Once you complete all of the checklist items, your case will be reviewed by one of
our PayPal Account Specialists and then everything will be back to normal.

    Thank you,
    PayPal Security Center.

      Re: Spoof Paypal email?

Over the years I've been with PayPal (at least 10), I've received dozens of spoof emails purporting to be from PayPal. The key to identifying them is in the domain. No unauthorised parties can send emails from paypal.com or paypal.co.uk, so you'll notice that, although the sender reads as PayPal, when you look at the actual email address they came from, you'll find something completely different. Some who see themselves as clever a*ses will set up a subdomain like paypal.mydodgydomain.com, which you can do on any domain. :nerd: :nerd: :nerd:

        Re: Spoof Paypal email?

Unfortunately the senders email address can be spoofed and appear to come from a domain that would give the scam credibility. Can't reply to it but that's not the point. I send emails with a from address that bears no relationship to the mail server that is actually sending, and the correctness is not checked during the send.

Look at any links in the email, hover the mouse over the link and see what address appears in the status bar at the bottom of the window. That's when you will see the funnies.

Do an internet search on the title of the message or some of the contents. Then delete the message. If you can look at the headers of the emails, normally hidden, then these can often give a clue as to where they came from.

The best rule is: never click links in emails like this even if you think it might be genuine.

Go to the website yourself - however you would normally do it (ie typing it in the address bar of a browser).
If there really is a problem with your account then you'll see it once you're in.

Fortunately, I managed to spot the flaw in their cunning plan.

              I don't have a Paypal account!
