My teenage tipple was Sweet Martini and lemonade..Campari if I had the money msl:
Isn't it sad that some convicts are so 'institutionilised' that the only way they cope is in prison. Maybe an option is to have 'after prison' places that those who can't cope and reoffend to get back inside have a place to go to. Not like the 'sanitoriums' of old,,but big old hostels where they have to work for their keep within the place.
I know what I mean..hope you lot do as well,,cos I can't think of the words to describe it.

For those of us that remember it you mean something like the halfway house that was run by Judy in the legendary series Prisoner Cell Block H

Nah,,my nephew was in an 'open prison'...it was like Butlins ffs...he went from YOI (Pontins) lol..Way too easy an option.I don't mean a halfway house either. They would still be in prison just not overcrowding the mainstream ones.

Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1971/38/contents

Created in 1971 to tackle the 5000 approx 'addicts' we had then.

Nearest guesstimate of 'addiction' levels now, 500000 +

So that legislation worked really well hey?
"Although scalar fields are Lorentz scalars, they may transform nontrivially under other symmetries, such as flavour or isospin. For example, the pion is invariant under the restricted Lorentz group, but is an isospin triplet (meaning it transforms like a three component vector under the SU(2) isospin symmetry). Furthermore, it picks up a negative phase under parity inversion, so it transforms nontrivially under the full Lorentz group; such particles are called pseudoscalar rather than scalar. Most mesons are pseudoscalar particles." (finally explained to a captivated Celestine by Professor Brian Cox on Wednesday 27th June 2012 )

It's a waste of time, Cel. The British government would do better to follow the Dutch and legalise Class A drugs so that GPs can prescribe them under strict conditions to addicts. Takes dealers out of the equation. They are the problem. The burglaries and shoplifting carried out by the addicts to fund their addiction is a consequence.
Life is a journey on which we all travel, sometimes together, but never alone.

I do: because if you don't, they will go back to offending. People are born with a survival instinct and if they haven't got any money and are hungry, what will they do? Steal, of course!

sooner we stop seeing the sob stories and realise these people are wrong doers the better!

We need a system of Dont enjoy being in prision? Dont do the crime!!
Uhmm, we'll have to ask some ex-prisoners to share their experiences and see if prison life really is that cushy, not having been inside myself, I guess I'm not qualified to offer an educated opinion, but I suspect there's more to being banged-up than just free room and board... :ohwell:

But once you've been there, done that, you can't turn the clock back, even if you've learned your lesson! So it's back to crime because you're left with no other alternative.

I am not talking about the punishment side of things here, i am talking about the rehabilitation side, that is part of the criminal justice system.
If someone is not provided any support is it any wonder that they resort to crime to survive. It's a bit different if your name is jeffrey archer and you have a home and a few million quid in the bank on your release

                    Re: Prisoners

have them trained in something useful then, dont give them benefits, give them an apprenticeship.. make them become worthwhile citezens.

Again, the more we say oh.. their human rights have been taken away, the more we forget the human rights of those they wronged!

They dont need benefits, they need employment, have them trained in a job while inside (rehabilitation see) and make them take a job, after all if they can tell a one legged Army vet you are fit for work, a lag who has never done an honest job in his life can work!!

No sympathy for repeat offenders, if you cant take the time, dont do the crime. Maybe if the benefits/help was stopped, and the sentancing stiffer people wouldn't be banged up in the first place, give the money you are giving criminals to the elderly/disabled instead.

You say give them a job or train them...there are no bloody jobs. Manufacturing has gone to hell, mining is no more,

It's a fantastic idea but how do you do it.

Tell you what, lets just shoot em all...end of problem

Another option...forced labour camps....send anyone we don't like there

                        Re: Prisoners

How about a form of conscription, you offend, you go into one of the armed forces for training, then if you're good enough you can either stay in, or come out with some self respect at the end of it. Obviously we're not talking about murders, rapists etc going in before Jon or CC get started.

And we used to chop peoples heads off but do we still want to do that?

I remember years ago talk about conscription and national service and it was said then that the Brass did not want to have to deal with such people as they had an country to protect

Well they'd get the money that we'd spend on putting them in prison, so that could help fund more people to join the regulars.
