It was as a means of a United Ireland because when they 6 states of Northern Ireland originally voted way back when the two middle states voted to be part of Southern Ireland but that did not happen.
The civil rights movement (from which "The Troubles" had arisen) had largely secured the rights of the populace. What remained was a lawless, sectarian and tribal squabble being fought by gunmen and terrorists on both sides. Even if the Brighton bomb had slaughtered Thatcher and her entire cabinet, one must surely doubt that events in Ulster would have taken a different course
I do not think that one bomb in Brighton helped the cause but perhaps the bombs in their entirety perhaps did help to bring about peace. When you keep bombing and bombing and bombing then eventually something has to give and the work of those who fought for peace and the very fact that there was a government in the north of Ireland has shown that peace rather than war is a better solution.
(And just how can someone claim to be a "loyalist" when he supports terror?)
To clarify, my gran was from County Galway so I kinda knew a little bit of the troubles. My gran worked as a nurse and there were times after the bombs went off when Irish nurses were spat at because of the effect that the Provo's bombs caused and that people assumed all Irish people supported that perspective. There was a time when I certainly could understand why they did what they did but Ireland is a better place without bombs and without violence, albeit it does flare up from time to time but thankfully the provo's and the so called "loyalists" remain at peace. It was slightly surprising that Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams commented on the death of Lady T in such a respectful tone. I doubt that would have been the case 20 years ago.....

I ran pubs for years, for my sins I had an Irish pub in the East End, fantastic nights were had but they got the proper hump when I stopped the hat being passed round, I suppose it was Karma that I was involved in the Docklands jobby years later

      Oh and .....

In Manchester, the bomb wrecked the appalling Arndale Centre.

Shame it wasn't Old Trafford says me an ardent Chelsea fan, now is that bang out of order ? msl:

        Why?

If she had not been so stubborn (and stupid) it seems doubtful that he would have been so successful.

Remember, it wasn't Thatcher but John Major-Balls who helped to start the "back channel" dialogue that eventually led to the Good Friday Agreement.

Oh memories of the Arndale centre and Kendals food hall (when they had two buildings)

They can blow up old trafford for all I care so long as they leave the important one there

I'm starting to find this thread offensive as a Man Utd fan(which means never been to Old Trafford or seen them live ).

Got to keep the Cricket ground. Now if you want to build somewhere I know a place in Leeds that could be used. Headingley I think it's called. Bit of grass needs something useful done on it

I always thought Hyde was Cheshire although i don't think the politics of boundary changes has ever been resolved

Didn't Dr Death Shipman practice genocide in Hyde,Tameside,Greater Manchester? And there is ,indeed a HYDE in Cheshire.
There are 3 towns with the same name as the one I live in in UK,,,if someone gets the wrong one they are over 300 miles away from where they want to be (and yes,,it has been done lol)

yes hyde is in Dr Shipmans area, my best friends mum used to work for him at one time, until she got a boil on her neck and he said it was cancer and tried to prescribe morphine to her....

Now theres a candidate for capital punishment, but he did the job for us.

Hyde is infact in Greater Manchester (I go there quite regularly to see The Brother and Jessica when she's home).

Hyde: where men are men and sheep are worried!!!
